SANDPIT

Every year new stallions exit the racing scene and begin a new life in the breeding shed. Hopes are high for most, however, within a few crops, most stallions are often tossed out as being failures and are forever forgotten. The elite few who do make it share a few common factors. One factor is that they have a pedigree pattern that often suits the mates from their region, and the other factor is they are in the hands of very clever pedigree consultants, who often find mares that suit them.
In the case of Sandpit, his very stud career could very well depend on the last factor I mentioned. His bloodlines are very unique and of high quality, however, they may not be suited to many of his mates, unless, like I mentioned just before, he is in some very scrutinous hands.
I have studied the pedigree of Sandpit to a great degree, ironically, by chance while looking for a mate for one of our mares. Our mare, Foolery, carries alot of French bloodlines, due to her inbreeding to the great Sea-Bird. These are strains I am very well familiar with due to intense study. To put it point blank-she is a hard one to mate over here in the good ole USA.
It can be done, if one puts away the fashionability factor. Some horses are just not suited for Mr. Prospector(etc.) blood. This is the case with our mare and many others I am sure. After the failure, the breeders scratch their heads and wonder, "why?".
Sandpit could very well have the same problem, if not properly mated. This is not a negative statement on his breeding. In the Southern Hemisphere his female line is highly regarded, as is his sire. There is alot of talent and ability in his blood, however, it may get diluted here in the States unless properly directed.
The #1 positive point Sandpit has going for him is his conformation and mental attitude. He will suit many mares in that regard.
When it comes to pedigree, I am afraid many of his best mates may not meet him.
The number one factor will be that many mares will go to the fashionable stallions instead of one that, on paper, works much better in genetic matchup. The second factor is, while I do believe that there are some mares around, there just may not be enough regionally for Sandpit to succeed.
Below I have Sandpit's 6 cross pedigree followed by my analysis of his bloodlines and what he needs in prospective mates.
SANDPIT

The success of a sire often hinges on the magnetic ability of his bottom, in other words, his dam. The merits succeeded on the track are often due to a compatibility from both parents, however, in the breeding shed, one must often focus on what comes from underneath. If you follow the patterns of the Phalaris sire line you will see this pattern from all branches.  The mares carry the sire line.  Phalaris carries a unique pattern that proceeded to balance and draw out the best from his mates. This progression continued and even past 6 generations, his position still garned balance to the pedigree in focus.  This is not to say that a sire line is doomed or destined to stay. It is just to point out that when horses are bred to genetically compatible mates, it tends to balance and continue the pedigree while continuing the success of the sire and dam line.
When I look at prospective mates for horses, I first note if there is any close inbreeding in the horse themselves, or any of their ancestors. Inbred horses tend to throw to their inbreeding with sex balanced strains of the ancestry of the individual they are inbred to. For example, a horse inbred to Round Table 3x3 could really benefit with horses that carry either daughters of Princequillo, more representatives of the Knight's Daughter family, sons of Sir Cosmo, sons of Papyrus(by Tracery), or even daughters of Tracery(does the name Ribot ring a bell?), etc., etc. Balancing the sex of the inbred individual's(in this case, Round Table)ancestry is a very powerful impact. Another angle to follow is to duplicate the common family tie through their female ancestry. If a horse is inbred to Prince John, one might try finding mates that carry Eight Thirty, Cosmic Bomb(found in Halo), or War Admiral. They all have a unique tie through the mare, Bathing Girl. This cross, (particularly Prince John, Eight Thirty, and War Admiral) has already proven its merit on the track as it has produced numerous high class performers. Off the top of my head, one that comes to mind is Spend A Buck.
Back to Sandpit. He is a very correctly bred horse, considering the gene pools of his parents. He carries a nice duplication of Hyperion(6f x 4m) and Donatello II(5m x 5f). Notice the sex balance!!
What is even more interesting is the heavy linebreeding from both his parents and certain inbred individuals in his genetic makeup.  Baynoun's closest duplicated ancestor is Court Martial(Fair Trial x Instantaneous by Hurry On). This duplication is represented in Baynoun himself, 4m x 5f. Sand Dancer carries Vieux Manoir(Brantome x Vieille Maison by Finglas) 4m x 5m.
The Hyperion / Donatello cross has accounted for many top class runners, and it is very clever how Baynoun brings in a reverse sex balance, albeit somewhat farther removed, of this cross in regards to the presence of Aureole in Sand Dancer's pedigree.  It would be very interesting to see mares carrying  an ancestor with a cross of Donatello II / Hyperion to mate to Sandpit. Alycidon comes to mind in this regard. This is where I will start my recommendations for matings with Sandpit.

ELA-MANA-MOU
The only stallion carrying Alycidon, that I could find(my resources are somewhat limited) is Ela-Mana-Mou. Mares by this stallion could really compliment Sandpit's breeding, and if his connections are doing their homework, they will try to purchase or provide mares by him. Ela-Mana-Mou is linebred to Alycidon, so the cross is very promising indeed.
There are some other interesting factors with Ela-Mana-Mou.  I found an interesting individual duplicated in his pedigree that could really work with Baynoun.
I mentioned before that Baynoun carries a duplication of Court Martial. In Ela-Mana-Mou, there is a duplication of The Recorder. Who is The Recorder?  Look below and you will see the connection.

Court Martial / The Recorder

Interesting isn't it?
Ela-Mana-Mou is by Pitcairn, and he carries another individual worth noting. His 4th dam is by Bosworth. This is important because Bosworth is by Son-in-Law. This factor compliments Lady Juror, who is also by Son-in-Law. Bosworth's dam is Serenissima, the dam of Selene. Selene, of course, is the dam of Hyperion, Pharamond, and Sickle, all of whom are found in Sandpit's pedigree.  Sandpit also carries Barley Corn through his sire and she is inbred to Serenissima 3x3. Barley Corn is by Hyperion(Gainsborough x Selene(Chaucer(St. Simon x Canterbury Pilgrim) x Serenissima)) and from a mare by Schiavoni(Swynford(John O' Gaunt x Canterbury Pilgrim) x Serenissima).

SICAMBRE
Barley Corn is also the dam of Shantung. Shantung is very interesting, not only because of Barley Corn, but also because of his sire, Sicambre.
Sicambre is a very important strain for Sandpit, and I predict, quite confidently, that if mated to mares carrying Sicambre, Sandpit will exceed.
Why is Sicambre so important? Sandpit's 3rd dam, Suffisante, is inbred to the mare Sif, through half sisters Senones and Fantine. Sif is the dam of Sicambre and most importantly, Senones herself is a full sister to him.
Sea-Bird(Dan Cupid x Sicalade by Sicambre) is the one particular stallion with Sandpit that I highly recommend.  With Sea-Bird you get a son of Sif (a mare that Sandpit's female line is inbred to through daughters, inluding a full sister to Sicambre), and a son of Dan Cupid, who is represented in Baynoun through a daughter from his 2nd dam, Danarella(Dan Cupid).
Another deeply hidden, but potentially explosive element with Sea-Bird are the ties to Rabelais. Sicalade is heavily linebred to Rabelais with 2 sons and 2 daughters. The presence of Vieux Manior and Noorani in Sandpit's pedigree make for a very interesting connection. Noorani descends from the mare Simone, as does Vieux Manoir's BM sire, Finglas. Who is Simone? Why she is Rabelais' full sister!!! Considering the fact that Sand Dancer carries two strains of Vieux Manoir, it could really be a force at work here.
We have a mare inbred to Sea-Bird 3 x 2 who is going to Sandpit. She also carries other elements in her pedigree that will suit him, including a 3/4 brother to Court Martial called Way In. I have the highest hopes for this mating, in fact, I personally think she will be his best match unless his connections are scouting for mares that suit him.

SHERNAZAR
This is a half brother to the ill-fated Shergar. What is most intriguing is his overall pedigree when compared to Sandpit. Daughters of Shernazar would really be interesting, however, I don't know of the availability of some of these mares in the US.
Shernazar is by Busted(Baynoun's BM sire) and from the mare Sharmeen, who is by Val De Loir(Green Dancer's BM sire). His 2nd dam is by Charlottesville, a 1/2 brother to the dam of Sassafras!!!!
There is one daughter of Shernazar that I would just love to see mated to Sandpit. I don't know of her whereabouts or if she is even still alive, however, I will hypothetically mate them just the same.
Her name is Kartajana, and according to my information, she was a stakes winner of over $600,000. Not bad. What is so marvelous about this mare is, not only is she by Shernazar, her BM sire is Shantung!!!!
Wow!!
Here's the Hypo.

THE FEOLA FAMILY
The presence of Auereole is an interesting angle to select mates for Sandpit. There are many repesentatives of this wonderful family. Horses that stem from this line are; Round Table, Aureole, Tentam, Tamerett, Mixed Marraige, Doutelle, Above Board, Height Of Fashion, Nashwan, Alwasmi, Unfuwain, Highclere, Borealis, Foxlaw, and most recently, Pulpit. These are just a few from a vast and wide family of quality all stemming from the mare Aloe. It seems that this family is still in full swing and can have a powerful impact when they meet up in pedigrees. Pulpit carries Round Table and his full sister, Monarchy.
Aureole is the sire of Sandpit's 2nd dam, so there is a chance that he could really throw to this family.
The best representative, in my opinion, is Nashwan(Blushing Groom). His dam, Height of Fashion, is actually carrying two crosses to her own family, so it is very likely that Nashwan will throw to it.  In fact, Height Of Fashion's 3rd dam, Hypercium(Hyperion x Feola) is a 3/4 sister to Aureole(Hyperion x Angelola(Donatello II x Feola)). The other strain comes from Doutelle(Prince Chevalier x Above Board(Straight Deal x Feola)), him being the BM sire of Bustino, the sire of Height Of Fashion. Above Board's sire, Straight Deal, is also a Gainsborough sire line representative. So all three carry Gainsbourough/Feola.
An interesting balance comes from Blushing Groom through his dam, Runaway Bride. She is a daughter of Wild Risk, whom Sandpit carries though a son in Busted, whose BM sire is Vimy, a son of Wild Risk.  Due to the duplication that would occur with Busted(through a son and a daughter, of course), the Wild Risk element is very complimentary in regards to Blushing Groom's influence.
Mares by Nashwan could be just what the doctor ordered for Sandpit.

It would also be interesting to see distant relatives of the Aloe family bred to Sandpit, even though their impact may not be as promising as Nashwan. I would recomend Round Table, Mixed Marraige(Perhaps through Atan, more so than Tamerett, however, even she would be a positive element.), and Forli would be interesting because he carries Foxlaw.

OTHER STRAINS OF NOTE

GREY DAWN II
If you look at Green Dancer there is a tie to a very common bloodline here in America.  His 2nd dam, Sly Pola, is a 1/2 sister to Grey Dawn II(Both from the mare Ampola), so mares carrying Grey Dawn II could also be plus for Sandpit. Herbager carries numerous french strains and could work well with the french bloodlines of Sandpit, even though it is far removed.

DAUGHTERS OF NIJINSKY II
Since he carries a son of Nijinsky II through his dam, a mare carrying a daughter might be very well worth trying

ROI  DAGOBERT
A mare carrying this fella could really be dynamite for Sandpit. He is by Shantung(Sicambre) and is a 1/2 sister to Sassafras, the paternal grandsire of Sandpit. There are some male line descendants of him around, most notably Play Fellow, however, I feel a strain from underneath, preferably a daughter, would work much better. It is rare and could be hard to find in America.

Overall, my top pick is Sea-Bird. There is a good chance he could be mated to a mare carrying him, since he was a top class sire and BM sire. In fact, there are a few nice stallion prospects coming out that might go well with daughters of Sandpit or even the reverse. Only time will tell on this one. The stallions in mind are; Kitwood, Level Sands, Future Storm, Norquestor, Pennekamp(this one could be real interesting), Private Key, Roanoake, Southern Halo, and Vicksburg.
Here's to the future, and GOOD LUCK SANDPIT!!!!!
