Here are the game grades:
Andy Kowske: A-
Granted, Purdue's talent up front was limited, but we saw an assertive Kowske that has been missing recently. Kowske picked up his share of garbage hoops, hit his free throws, and was a force on the boards.
Charlie Wills: C
With Boone and Penney hitting outside and Kowske cleaning up inside, Wills' role on offense was limited.
Roy Boone: B
Another solid game for Roy. Boone was outstanding in the first half, with a variety of jump shots in addition to his usual complement of free throws. After the injury on the dunk, he struggled, but his overall numbers were solid.
Kirk Penney: B+
Penney scored 17 points despite only taking 5 shots which tells you about his efficiency. What was also nice to see was the increased attempts (and makes) from the line. Defensively, he had some trouble keeping the quicker Boilers out of the lane, furthering the theory that he defends bigger better than smaller at the present time.
Mike Kelley: D
Was limited by the fact that he just couldn't stay on the floor due to foul trouble, playing only 16 minutes. Had a nice driving bucket and a pair of steals in his brief time, but 16 minutes just isn't acceptable from Mike.
Ricky Bower: B+
A nice supporting game for Ricky, with 10 points on jumper, a drive to the hole, and a bunch of late free throws. Throw in a couple boards and an assist and you have a solid performance.
Mark Vershaw: C-
Wasn't the focal point of the offense with Boone and Penney playing so well, limiting his touches. However, he seemed to be a little bothered by Wetzel inside and once again had some trouble finishing on a couple of bunnies. He also had a number of looks from "3", but generally passed on them which may have been a wise move since he missed the two he DID take.
Maurice Linton: D
Playing time took a huge hit, only finding the floor late in the first half and in some garbage minutes in the second half. Failed to prove he needs more PT at the current time.
Travon Davis: B
Saw extended minutes with Kelley in foul trouble and generally played well. He had trouble finishing on his drives as usual, but distributed the ball well (6 assists to 2 turnovers).
Owens, Mader, Schmit, Ukawuba, Grusczynski: INC
Garbage time. Mader missed a short shot off a nice pass from Owens. Gruz grabbed a couple of defensive boards.
