Michigan State Spartans
January 13, 2001

Andy Kowske: C-
Kowske was his usual solid defensive self and did a fairly decent job on the glass, but was a non-entity on offense. He shook free for only 2 jump shots (hitting one) in 35 minutes.

Charlie Wills: D
Wills was in foul trouble, failed to grab a single rebound, and launched up an ill-advised turnaround jumper from the free throw line.

Travon Davis: C
A fairly non-descript game for Davis. He defended Marcus Taylor fairly well on the perimeter and had a nice dig defensively.

Roy Boone: B+
Boone was an offensive force for the Badgers. While his shooting percentage wasn't great, many of his shots were "shot clock winding down bailouts". Yet, he hit a variety of jumpers and slashed into the lane effectively on his way to 22 points. He also was a solid factor inside on the glass. Defensively, he had his ups and downs against some tough matchups. He was guarding Bell when Bell shook free in the second half for some big MSU shots and was partially responsible for Bell's game-tieing 3.

Mike Kelley: C
Defensively, Kelley took Charlie Bell right out of the game before switching his attention to Jason Richardson, containing him for the majority of the second half. He also had some beautiful interior feeds (5 assists) offensively. However, he shot only 1 for 4 from the field and missed a key last minute jumper as well as the front end of a one and one, both which could have sealed the win.

Kirk Penney: B-
Penney didn't get many early looks, but came on in the second half to bury 2 of 3 from long range in the Badger comeback. Like Kelley, he also missed the front end of a one and one late in the game.

Maurice Linton: C
Linton had a tough time getting good looks at the basket over the bigger Spartans, and as a result forced some shots. He WAS active on the boards though and was strong with the ball (2 assists without a turnvoer). He gave up some early threes to Richardson, but much of that was on double downs and rotations.

Mark Vershaw: A-
Vershaw shot the ball well on a variety of postups, drives, and face up jumpers, totally 18 points. And, while he forced a few passes inside, his deft passing kept MSU guessing and his teammates involved. On the downside, he again only grabbed 3 rebounds and was outmuscled underneath on the defensive glass.

Dave Mader: D
Came in to supply some minutes inside, but his inexperience really showed against the Spartans and he had a tough time.

Freddie Owens: C
Like Mader, Owens was needed to provide a few minutes of time. He held his own defensively though he missed a wide open 3.
