1/30 Update: Here are the game grades from the basketball game yesterday against Iowa:
Andy Kowske: C
Got off to a quick start offensively, but didn't get many touches the rest of the way as Iowa stopped pressing (taking away his easy finishes) and Kowske got into foul trouble again due to some silly reach in fouls. Defensively, he did a decent job on Jaacks but didn't rebound all that well. Kowske also committed a key turnover at crunch time (and had 3 for the game).
Charlie Wills: D
Hit on a 3 point play early but was a turnover machine on offense for much of the game (4 in 13 minutes), resulting in Charlie getting pulled at least twice.
Roy Boone: D
Usual Boone...a little bit of everything but puncuated by a bunch of missed shots and too many turnovers in his given playing time. Did get 3 boards and 2 assists in his minutes, but they just don't equate the numerous possessions he has been costing the team when on the floor.
Kirk Penney: C-
Was solid on the boards and hunting his shot, but just didn't make enough again. Key turnover down the stretch and missed a huge jumper. Got to the line well. Defense has really improved.
Mike Kelley: D
As Bennett said before the game, Oliver would give Kelley trouble. After an early burst, Kelley did a pretty good job on Oliver for much of the game. However, when crunch time rolled around, Oliver started to penetrate and Kelley just could not stay with him, leading to Kelley fouling out. Kelley didn't do much on offense either.
Jon Bryant: D
Cold from the field, many of which were wide open jumpers that he just has to hit. Also was the primary defender of Luehrsmann when he got hot in the second half.
Mark Vershaw: A-
Not great on the board as usual, but was outstanding offensively with effective moves in the post to go with some spot up jumpers. Passed the ball well though teammates blew at least 3 open layups off his potential assists. Should have gotten the ball more late.
Maurice Linton: B-
Gave the team a little energy when Wills was playing poorly. Got some rebounds and blocked a shot in limited time.
Travon Davis: C
Limited minutes due to bad matchups on the floor. When Davis was matched up with Oliver, Oliver ate him alive, causing Bennett to immediately get Travon off the floor. Played under control when he was in there with a couple of assists without a turnover.
Duany Duany: C
Back in anther shooting funk. Bennett went to Doc when they needed someone to contain Oliver. Did an ok job. Took one ill-advised shot though it is a shot he CAN make. Hit his free throws.
