Douggie's recent feats of hockey wizardry
(The amazingly slow me finally figured out it would be more logical to put the most recent game first, finally, on 2/25/98)

Somehow...I don't remember February...groundhogs...I'll catch up in March...sorry about that...
Thursday, January 28th, 1999- Hawks vs. Calgary
In an interesting, high scoring game that ended up in a tie...the Hawks showed that they have at least progressed since the beginning of the year, which is something at least. Doug had 2 goals and an assist which sincerely helped the Hawks' comeback from 6-3, to the final of 6-6. A win would have been appreciated, but the Flames are pretty good, and you have to give Theo Fleury some credit.
Hawks:6, Flames:6
Wednesday, January 27th, 1999- Hawks vs. Edmonton
While I am still getting over the extreme uncoolness of Doug not making the All-Star team, I am happy to report a 3 assist night in the 4-3 overtime win over the Edmonton Oilers. In fact, he was awesome all around, especially in behind the net, where he always seems to be at the perfect moment. His 16/24 faceoff wins also helped boost the Hawks out of last place in the West! As my Furby would say, "Party!"
Hawks:4, Oilers:3
Thursday, January 21st, 1999- Hawks vs. Montreal
I love a victory, especially when it comes against a decent team like the Habs. Thibault showed where he really belongs, and hacket was left in the dust. Pretty cool. And to top it all off, Gilmour had an assist on the first goal of the game, an Emerson goal 12:21 into the first. Yeah, Hawks!!
Hawks:3, Habs:0
Sunday, January 17th- Hawks vs. Phoenix
Ooooh, hey, look, a tie against one of the best teams in the league...I'm not going to say that it's as good as a win but we'll take what we can get, eh? No points for Doug in this one, but he did get a penalty, a double-minor for high-sticking. The refs were really after the high sticking penalties in this one for some reason, because another double-minor was handed out to a 'Yote player later in the game.
Hawks:1, 'Yotes:1
Friday, January 15th- Hawks vs. NY (Rangers)
Finally, a game I can watch, thanks to MSG. I'm so happy, this silly winless streak is brought to an end, at least for now, and for a while, I hope. Gilmour got the ball (or would that be puck?) with a goal in the first which opened up the Hawks' scoring. He was setting up awesome plays that unfortunately didn't net any results after the goal, but that's OK. His awesome play, as well as great skating by the Hawks gave the hawks their 3 goals, but it should be noted that Thibault was pretty great in goal, and without him, the game might have been a lot worse.
Hawks:3, Rangers:1
Tuesday, January 12th, 1999- Hawks vs. Colorado
Bad news first, just because that's the way I am...The hawks lose...again...but on a happy note, Doug notched his 30th assist, a primary assist, on the first, last, and only Hawk goal of the night. I hate the Avs....gggrrrrrrr....
Hawks:1, Avs:4
Sunday, January 10th, 1999- Hawks vs. Colorado
This was actually close, well...even though the Avs aren't so great this year...well, no Douggie points here...not much to talk about...mumbling aimlessly...insert score here...I have very strong feelings about overtime and one day I'm going to write them down...but not now...
Hawks:2, Avs:3 (OT)
Saturday, January 9th, 1999- Hawks vs. Nashville
Did I ever mention how much I hate Nashville? It just makes for country music stars pretending they like hockey by wearing Preds jerseys in their videos. I don't mind country music, but I hate expansion hockey teams in tropical climates!!! Oh, yeah...sorry...anyway, Gilmour had two, counbt 'em two assists, a 5-minute fighting major for a little scuffle with Bouchard, and to top it all off, an unsportsmanlike conduct call at the end of the third period! Pretty sweet! OK, so I'm a major advocate of fighting in hockey.
Hawks:3 , Preds: 3
Thursday, January 7th, 1999-Hawks vs. St. Louis
This was such a Gilmour night, he scored the first two goals of the game, the only Blackhawk goals scored, played awesomely both ways, but unfortunately, the Blues took the game. The first goal was scored just 40 seconds in from daze and Kilger. The second came at 6:22 of the first from Olczyk and Muir.
Hawks:2, Blues:4
Tuesday, January 5th, 1999- Hawks vs. NY (Isles)
Hmmm....not much to say here, really...it was a tie...no points for Douggie...I can't remember watching the game at all...I don't even know where I was...sorry about that...it was a tie, though. Did I mention that already?
Hawks:1, Isles:1
Sunday, January 3rd, 1999- Hawks vs. Detroit
Ummm...this was a loss, for certain...3-1...no Gilmour points, no Gilmour penalties...just a loss, but, well, they are the defending NHL Stanley Cup champs, no excuse, I know...
Hawks:1, Wings:3
Saturday, January 2nd, 1999- Hawks vs, Detroit
The highlight of this game was a cross-checking penalty...alright, it wasn't the highlight, but it was the only reason that Gilmour was in the game's box score at all...so...it's a highlight...just nod and smile, OK? I'm a little bit insane, just a little.
Hawks:2, Wings:5
Thursday, December 31st, 1998- Hawks vs. NY (Isles)
First of all, Happy New Year, second, way to go Hawks. The Hawks really fought for this win, with excellent play by all, especially Thibault in goal, Probert with the game winner, and of course Doug, with all around excellent play. Though he didn't have any points, Douggie's exhibition of his two-way play and defensive talent (can we say SELKE TROPHY?) helped the Hawks secure the win in the third. A few awesome diving saves and a few almost-penalties played into his key defensive role in the new year's eve matchup. Even the announcers gave him credit for his awesome faceoff ability, not letting the Isles score a last second goal with the extra attacker. Way to go Hawks!
Hawks:1, Isles:0
Saturday, December 26th, 1998- Hawks vs. Philly
1201 points!! With a "killer" goal in the second period, Douggie got a late Christmas present, I guess you could say, as he put the puck past the Beezer for the Hawks' goal. To pull the points total up yet again, he scored in the third on an assist from Bob Probert, pretty sweet game guys. On a different note, Dougie got to hold off Eric DesJardins in the scuffle that followed that wacky game misconduct call against Eric Lindros. To quote the announcer of the broadcast I was watching, "Maybe Dilbert could referee," but I guess you had to see it for it to be funny. OK, so they lost, no biggie...
Hawks:2, Flyers:3
Wednesday, December 23rd, 1998- Hawks vs. Phoenix
Ha! Ha ha! OK, sorry, just thinking back to a cartoon I ripped out of The Hockey News with that silly little coyote standing over the graves of all the teams they had severely clobbered...well, that's sorta funny seeing that the Hawks, undeniably not one of the best teams in the league, beat the 'Yotes...or maybe that's just my opinion. Beyond that silly point of mine, as hidden as it was, Douggie had 2, count 'em two goals, as in one short of a hattrick! Go Douggie! No unsportsmanship here! One shorthanded and one power-play goal...sorta going for the wide variety here. Whatever needs to be done to end a 5-game winless streak, eh? Kudos to Thibault (T-Bo!) for awesome play against the Phoenix powerhouse.
Hawks:4, 'Yotes:3
Sunday, December 20th, 1998- Hawks vs. Los Angeles
Unsportsmanlike conduct?! OK, so I missed this game, and obviously the Douggie penalty that went along with it. But I'd have to say that whatever Dougie did to deserve that, it probably was provoked by that little punk Robataille...well, no points for Douggie, but apparently he represented himself quite well...even thought they lost the game. What can I do? (rhetorical question)
Hawks:1, Kings:4
Saturday, December 19th, 1998- Hawks vs. Philly
Did I ever mention how much I hate the Flyers? Not Philadelphia in general, just the Flyers...except John Leclair, because of the large contingent of Vermonters that would kick my butt if I spoke a word against LeClair...That's all for this game, no points for Douggie.
Hawks:1, Flyers:3
Thursday, December 17th, 1998- Hawks vs. Washington
OK, all I have to say...well, not all, but first...is that the official website for the coolest game on earth should update their ticker more than once an hour, so that stupid me doesn't sit and stare at it for hours on end trying to see who's gonna break the tie when the game has been over for over an hour. Yes, I'm stupid, but still, it's the principle of the thing. Oh, yeah, and the Hawks lost...no excuses, no Douggie stuff, a straight out loss, but it was tied for a while, a considerably long while if you happened to join me in watching the NHL.com sports ticker...
Hawks:1, Caps 3
Sunday, December 13th, 1998- Hawks vs. Dallas
I'm very impressed here. And happy. Don't forget happy. Now, of course I realize that it was just a tie, but come on here folks! The Stars are pretty darned good, and a tie against them is pretty impressive in its own special way. Since I have to go study for my French final, I'll quickly mention that Douggie got another assist! Awesome, eh? I would say it in French if I had any idea how...it's elementary French...all I can say is "j'aime jouer au hockey"....translated- I like to play hockey! Go Hawks! Vive les Hawks...or something...
Hawks 2, Stars 2
Friday, December 11th, 1998- Hawks vs. Toronto
Well, I still love the Leafs, as much as I wanted the Hawks to win this one, well...my heart wasn't in it. Happily, Dougie had his third goal of the year, to tie the game up at a goal apiece. So, that's a positive, eh? Well, that's all for now, because I didn;t actually watch the game, I was watching my St. Lawrence Saints clobber the Ferris State Bulldogs in a lovely display of hockey talent.
Hawks:2, Leafs:3
Wednesday, December 9th, 1998- Hawks vs. Edmonton
I like it when the Hawks win, really I do, and the fact that Gilmour had an assist on Daze's third period goal just made my night, at least until the car alarm in the parking lot behind my dorm went off at 3:14 and didn't go off until the car battery died like an hour later!! Geesh, sorry about that...
Hawks:3, Oilers:1

I'm currently working on info for these games, sorry.

Tuesday, November 17th- Hawks Vs. Nashville
A win! Yes! Party! OK, so it was Nashville, granted, but a win is a win is a win. Douggie had an assist on Amonte's first period goal, and I'm happy to have Thibault on our happy team now, even though Fitzpatrick was goalie here. Yeah T-Bo!! Party on Hawks, keep it up, eh?
Hawks:2, Preds:1
Sunday, November 15th- Hawks Vs. Ottawa
OK, so, a tie is still a point, right? Yes, I know, it was a rhetorical question. Well, I'd rather have a tie than a loss any day. I'd actually rather have a win, or 10 wins, but that's OK, it's a start. Doug had an assist to tie the game at 2, after a Sen breakaway goal. That's all. Go Hawks!
Hawks:2, Sens:2
Thursday, November 12th- Hawks Vs. Toronto
Um, OK, now I know how depressed I can get. I'm not exactly sure what I actually watched. It almost looked like the Leafs were playing a junior team. It was more of slaughter than a game, sadly enough. No points for Douggie, not even a penalty. Geesh, I like the Leafs and the Hawks, but this was pathetic. That's all I have to say.
Hawks:3, Leafs:10
Tuesday, November 10th- Hawks Vs. St. Louis
Ummm, can we say losing streak? How depressed can I get? 5-2? Blecch! No Doug- points either. Unless I come up with anything clever to say in 30 seconds, that's all I feel like writing.
Hawks:2, Blues:5
Sunday, November 8th- Hawks Vs. Edmonton
Ugghhh...I hate Guerin...always have always will...anyway, he screwed up the game for Hawks...that's his job, granted, but still...OK, so the Hawks lose again...that's HOW MANY games without a win? I don't really care to count...I actually forgot the game was being played, until I caught a recap on the French CBC station I get for some reason. OK, I'll cut to the chase, Doug had an assist on the second period Amonte goal, but the silly Oilers went on to win in stupid overtime...something seriously god better happen before playoff time to get the Hawks in shape...
Hawks:1, Oilers:2 (OT)
Friday, November 6th- Hawks Vs. Tampa Bay
Can anyone explain what qualifications it takes to get a hockey team? Why does Tampa Bay need a team? I hate Tampa Bay...It's a general trend towards hockey teams in places that don't have snow, let alone ice...Anyway, I mumble because Douggie went pointless and was -1 inplus/minus. The Hawks can beat Edmonton, maybe, I hope, please!!! But a tie is a point and if that's all we can get, so be it...
Hawks:2, Lightning:2
Wednesday, November 4th- Hawks Vs. Florida
Did I mention I hate Florida? Not the state itself so much as the Panthers...I quite like the state...except those strange people that drove by and yelled Devils suck last when I was there last year. It was funny at the time, since the Panthers were in last place then, but I wander from my point...which now I forget. The point is, Doug had an assist on the only Hawk goal, which makes him about the most vital part of the team, but we need offense guys! Come on! It's Florida!
Hawks:1, Panthers:2
Sunday, November 1st- Hawks Vs. Calgary
Um...sorry this is so late getting posted (it's Tuesday, well, late for me, I'm usually pretty prompt), I just had a paper due, and then a speech for my Canadian/American relations class. Anyway, another disappointing showing for the Hawks, but on a positive note, Douggie had a power play assist...that's all for me today...have to figure a way to get Hawks games in upstate NY, any ideas?
Hawks:1, Flames:4
Friday, October 30th- Hawks Vs. Florida
I'll get to the good stuff first. Douggie had a power play goal in the second period!!! Awesome, way to go! Unfortunately, it was not enough, and the Hawks went on to lose...severely. Another unfortunately, I was not able to watch the game because there was boxing on! Not that I would have wanted to see the Hawks lose to Florida...but the goal would have been nice. On a positive note, but an irrelevant one, my school's women's hockey team kicked Ottawa Capital butt in exhibition play. OK, so you didn't need to know that...
Hawks:3, Panthers:7
Wednesday, October 28th- Hawks Vs. Carolina
I wasn't home to watch this game, because I had to edit the sports section of our school paper. Go Saints! Anyway, the game went to the 'Canes, who I really don't like, because they beat the Devils in the first hockey game I ever saw live, it's a grudge thing. Anyway, one of the goals was scored against Douggie's line, which isn't a good thing, but it's not a big deal, either. Apparently, there was a little scrum between Gary Roberts and Douggie, but there didn't seem to be any penalty minutes, so...I don't know...
Hawks:0, 'Canes:3
Saturday, October 24th- Hawks Vs. Nashville
Finally! I really like wins! I was a little scared that the Hawks were going to lose to an expansion team. I hate when that happens. Anyway, since they didn't, and since I'm jubilant, I can happily inform you that Doug had an assist on the second Chicago goal of the night, a Chad Kilger power play goal at 3:30 of the second period. He was even in plus-minus points for the night, and all in all, it was a good night, a close game, since the tying and game winning goals were in the last 5 minutes, but the Hawks notched another two points and didn't lose to the Predators! Yippee! I ran out of stuff to say, so...
Hawks:5, Preds:4
Thursday, October 22nd- Hawks Vs. San Jose
We remember what happened the last time I tried to type the Douggie report for the game before the game was over, right? The Ducks scored, messing up my hopes of a Hawk comeback. I've chanced that happening again in this Hawk/Shark matchup, just so you can get the stats as they happen. That's nice of me, huh? Actually, I need sleep. Anyway, Doug had an assist on the Hawk goal in the 6:20 into the first period. Yes, Hawks just tied it up, that's what we like to see, no Douggie points on the play though, unfortunately. Overtime, baby! Ugggh, I hate ties, oh well, that's it...
Hawks:2, Sharks:2
Monday, October 20th- Hawks Vs. Montreal
Ok, some people are going to be upset by this game, I can see it now, I sort of dread going upstairs, but the Hawks kicked butt! Muhahahaha (evil laugh) !! Unfortunately, no points for Douggie on this fine evening, but Eric Daze had a good night, and whenever the Hawks win, it is a good night for Hawk players, and the reason I'm rambling on is because from what I can tell, I have nothing to say, because I couldn't even watch the game :( Way to go Hawks, it's now time to go upstairs and get beaten up by the Habs fans in my dorm... :)
Hawks:2, Habs:1
Saturday, October 17th- Hawks Vs. Dallas (Rematch, baby!)
A pleasant surprise from the Hawks offense, they trailed 3-1 until Zhamnov notched a goal at 15:19, second period. Then, Chelios picked up a goal 23 seconds into the third, to tie the game. Ethan Moreau then picked up the game winner at 5:38, off assists by Zmolek and Gilmour, you knew he had to be in here somewhere, eh?
Hawks:4, Stars:3
Thursday, October 15th- Hawks Vs. Anaheim
Ok, maybe I should let the game finish before I type anything, but I'm just so bored, and I can't even watch the game because it's not televised here :( Anyway, Douggie had an assist on an Amonte power play goal to kick off scoring in the first, and an unassisted goal in the third period. I keep thinking that if I watched the sportsticker long enough the fact that the Hawks were losing to the Ducks would change, but it doesn't seem to be doing so...1:55 left...Don't I have anything better to do? No, not really. Ahh crap! Pardon my language, eh? Ducks just scored again. This is a lesson in web page creation: Always wait 'til the game is over to type...1:16 to go...Nope, never mind, game over...Hawks lose another one...I'm too depressed to type.
Hawks:3, Ducks:5
Tuesday, October 13- Hawks Vs. Dallas
Hmmm...well, this game ended pretty much as I'd expected it to, unfortunately, that wasn't a good thing. Gilmour had an assist on a Kilger goal, for the first goal of the night, and the only Hawk goal. It was a beautifully executed pass from behind the net to Kilger, in the slot, who put it between Belfour's pad. Unfortunately, the Stars went on to score 2 goals on Hackett, and another goal on the empty net.
Hawks:1, Stars:3
Saturday, October 10- Hawks Vs. Devils
Yes! Hockey season has finally commenced! It took long enough. Anyway, to get to the game. I caught the last 2 periods, because I had been watching the Leafs/Redwings game, not realizing that the Devs game was carried all the way up here. Well, now I know. OK, so, this was a great game, and given that in Dougie's first game as a Hawk, he had a stellar performance, I think it bodes well for the season to come. Douggie set up the second goal for the Hawks, which turned out to be the game winning goal. On an awesome pass to Amonte, in the slot, Gilmour picked up his first Hawks regular season point, and looked really good in the process. He exhibited his two-way play talent, backing up Hackett. If Gilmour was feeling any animosity about playing his former team, it didn't show. When it came down to it, he was checking his former linemates as hard as anyone else, and even getting in on a little scrum action, even if it was only from the bench. All in all, a great showing, even if I did miss the first period.
Hawks:2, Devils:1
Saturday, May 2nd-GAME SIX Devils Vs. Ottawa
Waaaaaaahhhhh!(That was me crying) Anyway, we all were on the edges of our seats during this one, and I'll bet we all remember how it ended. Though this one should have gone our way, the game was one by the evil Ottawa Senators who scored that awful second goal after whacking Brodeur's stick out of his hands, while some idiot in the crowd was shining a pen laser in his eyes. Gee, what a fair game. Anyway, no points for Gilmour...there's always next season, though...I hope he gets resigned by New Jersey, but if not...well...I don't know..
Devils:1, Ottawa:3
Thursday, April 30th-GAME FIVE Devils Vs. Ottawa
In an awesome Do-or-die situation, the Devils triumph over the Ottawa Senators. Gilmour had a wonderful play off a pass which hit his skate, bounced, but was able to be played by Doug, from backhand to forehand and stuffed between the legs of Rhodes for a beautiful insurance goal in the third period. He was star of the game too Ithink, though I need to check on that one.
Devils:3, Ottawa:1
Tuesday,April 28th-GAME FOUR Devils Vs. Ottawa
All Right. Now I'm getting worried. It takes a lot to get me worried, but the current situation is not looking good...I refuse to let the Devils lose to Ottawa. Though there's nothing I can do to stop it, if everyone wishes on those little twinkling things in the sky, maybe the Devils will pull something out of their hats...uh, helmetsI don't want to hear anything else in the papers about the fault being placed on Doug, because that is totally unfair and misplaced. They win as a team, they lose as a team. There can't be any blame placed on any one player, especially Doug, who has had the best playoff performance of the Devils, in my humble opinion.
Anyway, despite the negative press that continues to pour from these loses to the 8th seeded Ottawa, I'd like to point out that Doug had a goal and an assist last night. The assist, during the first period, was on a Pederson goal. The goal he scored was off an Arnott pass, which Douggie proceeded to throw in front of the net from behind it, and it magnificently went off a skate and in. He also had a little high-sticking penalty, as well as a holding penalty...though I have to say that the hold looked a little more like a hug and less like a penalty.
Everyone cross your fingers for Thursday
Devils:3, Ottawa:4
Sunday, April 26th-GAME THREE Devils Vs. Ottawa
Nothing much to tell here. But my friend said that she saw the game and that Douggie got named as the player who gave the most effort or something like that(Thanks Cassia!), but I didn't see it. Actually, I didn't even see the game until replays late Sunday...not that there was much to see, I guess. Well, hopefully, something will work out better Tuesday, I can't stand to see the Devils lose to such a mediocre team. I hope the reffing gets better too, but there's no use in crying over spilled milk. Actually, I hope the newspapers get better headlines, too..."Otta-wahh!" just seems so silly...
Devils:1, Ottawa:2 (OT)
Friday, April 24th-GAME TWO Devils Vs. Ottawa
If this wasn't the most beautiful game, I don't know what is.In a most wonderful effort by Douggie and the entire Devils squad, the best of 7 series has been tied one game a piece. With an awesome assist, and two brilliant backhand goals, Gilmour lead the Devils to a much needed vistory over Ottawa in a totally action packed game. Gilmour was named star of the game, which was totally deserved, and it seems like this series, as Doug himself said, is going to be nothing like first round playoff time last year.
Devils:3, Ottawa:1
Wednesday, April 22nd- GAME ONE Devils Vs. Ottawa
Well, I have to say that despite a disappointing first game loss to Ottawa, Gilmour played well. He scored that awesome game tying goal...my screams could be heard down the block, I'm sure...plus he demonstrated that defensive talent that won him the Selke trophy in '93. There's always next game.
Devils:2, Ottawa:3 (OT)
Saturday, April 18th: Devils Vs. NY Islanders
Well, in the last game of the regular season for the Devils, they managed to lose to the Islanders, but that's OK, they'll do bertter in the playoffs. Anyway, Gilmour picked up an assist on the only Devils goal when his pass from behind the net to Pederson hit its mark and Pederson put the puck in the net for the goal, even though they went on to lose, a point is a point!Oh, and another thing, Douggie was 3rd star of the game, Yeah Douggie!!!
Devils:1, Isles:2
Dougie didn't play Thursday, April 16th against Chicago, but, well, they tied, 1-1.
Wednesday, April 15th: Devils Vs. Buffalo
In a totally beautiful and triumphant return to the ice, Gilmour played a truly phenomenal game against the Sabres, despite a good effort by Steve Shields and the way one Sabre in particular seemed to be picking on Dougie...but he got what was coming to him from Lyle Odelein for that:) Anyway, in this wonderous return to the ice, Dougie picked up a secondary assist on the wonderful game-winning overtime goal of Scott Stevens! Way to go Dougie!
Devils:5, Sabres:4 (OT)

This is that horrible time where Dougie wasn't playing so I have little to say, in actuality, I have nothing to say.

Thursday, March 6th: Devils Vs. Boston
This was so unbelievably depressing. Not so much the fact that the Devils tied the Bruins, but the injury! Obviously, it's sad that this would happen, especially so close to the end of the season. Optimistically, they're saying maybe he'll be back in a few weeks...but that seems really early to me, but what do I know. Adding to the sadness of this game was that the ref had the nerve to call a penalty on Douggie while he's laying hurt on the ice!!! Talk about kicking a guy when he's down. The thing that quite bothered me...as a grand finale to everything else...was the utterly stupid press conference afterwards...Lemaire repeating that they were tired about a dozen times and knowing absolutely nothing about Dougie's injury...uggghh...I hope Dougie gets well soon, it's going to be a long 21 games...
Devils: 1, Bruins:1
Monday, March 2nd: Devils Vs. Philadelphia
A real nail-biter right to the end, this one was...well, not quite to the end, but the majority of the game. This ultra-lightspeed game flew by, and in the end, left Jersey victorious, again. No points for Douggie, but extremely excellent play by him, and a nifty little penalty (tripping) that lead to a Devils goal...sort of. He was in the penalty box when it was scored, but the thought was there.
Devils:4, Philadelphia:3
Saturday, February 28th: Devils Vs. Carolina
Wow, what a game! Though I'm ashamed to admit that I was unable to see the game when it was actually occurring, I was able to catch a replay and what a game it was! Anyway, in the first home game for the Devils since the Olympic break, an extremely well placed shin pad was the deciding factor, of course in addition to the excellent play of all the Devils. Oh, the shin pad thing...well, it all boils down to the fact that with about 8 seconds left in the game, a pass from Jason Arnott to Doug Gilmour, seemingly magically, deflected off Gilmour's shinpad, off Trevor Kidd's pads, and into the goal. This miracle goal won the game for the Devils, got a goal for Dougie, his 13th of the season, and also earned him star of the game! Wish I had been able to see it the first time around...
Devils:4, Carolina:2
Thursday, February 26th: Devils Vs. Tampa Bay
So, we all pretty much figured how this one was going to end even before it started, right? So the final score was no big surprise. Yet again, with quite a bit of help from Dougie, the Devils leave a lesser team in the dust. An awesome pass from Gilmour, behind the net, to Andreychuk who put the puck in the net off a defenseman's foot, scored the first goal of the game, a power play goal. It looked as if Doug would score a goal of his own later in the game on a penalty killing breakaway shot, but the puck was grabbed by Fitzpatrick. Oh well, a point is a point. Another great game!
Devils:4, Tampa Bay:1
Wednesday, February 25th: Devils Vs. Florida
Finally, the Olympic break is over and we can get back to some serious hockey. In a well fought effort against the Beezer and his Floridian teammates, the best team was triumphant, of course, the Devils. Though Florida scored first, Dougie managed an excellent play off the skate of a Florida player from Sykora, fed it back to Sykora for an awesome goal off the left post. I have to give congratulations to Mike Dunham AND Ken Daneyko for their valiant play in this game.
Devils:3, Florida:2
Saturday, February 7th: Devils Vs. NY Islanders(A 3:00 game)
This was a nice game to play right before the Olympic Break, and yes, I'm still upset that Doug won't be playing. Anyway, in a great game, the Devils managed to stifle the offense of the NY Islanders, at least, enough to win the game. The Islanders scored first, but on an assist by Douggie, the Devils tied up the game, and scored two more goals to take the lead, which stood up, despite another Islanders goal. Douggie exhibited some more of his two-way ability in assisting to clear the puck out and away from the crease on more than one occasion. In a silly bit of action in the Devis zone during the third period, Dougie got his stick chopped away by an Islanders offenseman, and picked up McKay's stick, which was laying on the ice. Realizing it was a righty stick, and Douggie being lefty, he sort of lobbed it to McKay, but it kind of missed, and floated across the ice. I don't know why I find this relevant, but it was funny, I guess you just had to watch it...oh well, they won!!
Devils:3, NY Islanders:2
Wednesday, February 4th: Devils Vs. Ottawa(again...)
Same result, virtually! We won again! No big deal, it's Ottawa, but still, a win is a win, especially considering Philadelphia lost to Dallas last night. Douggie was on the ice for the second goal, so, happy plus minus point for him. Other than that, a pretty uneventful game...I'll probably have more to say after I watch the game again..or maybe not...
Devils:2, Ottawa:0
Monday,February 2nd: Devils Vs. Ottawa
Woo Hoo!! We won!! And Douggie got some recognition, so it's sort of like killing 2 birds with one stone...or puck...or whatever. Anyway, excellent play, as usual, from Doug led to a behind the net feed, off a rebound of a Holik shot, from Gilmour to Sykora for a goal over the shoulder of the Ottawa goalie, Rhodes. This was Doug's 50th assist as a NJ Devil. This was also the first and only goal of the game. In addition to the beautiful assist, Douggie got a 2 minute roughing penalty for a little scuffle with York, the Senator who also got 2. In addition, as if those two things weren't enough, Doug was the 3rd star of the game, behind Brodeur(with the shutout) and an Ottawa player I can't remember, but I think it was Igor Kravchuk. Then, yes there is more, the goal scored by Sykora(off the lovely Gilmour assist) was the Duracell play of the game, so we got to see that beautifully executed play yet again. An excellent Devils comeback, as well as a great game for Dougie.
Devils:1, Ottawa:0
Saturday,January 31st: Devils Vs. Calgary
I have just one thing to say: WE ALMOST WON! Silly shot off a silly play by some Flame player whose name I can't pronounce and we end up with another tie against a merely mediocre team...how annoying. Anyway, no points for Douggie here, but that's OK, because we all know that a Douggie slump can't last forever and he'll have a whole lot of time off over Olympic break(I have a lot more to say about that) in order to become refreshed and relax and will come back and score numerous points in future games. Of course, it is more than likely that he will score sooner than that. Never count Douggie out. Anyway, here's the score...
Devils:2, Calgary:2
Friday,January 30: Devils Vs. Vancouver(A 10:05 game...)
OK, well maybe this game didn't go exactly as anyone planned, in fact, this game was flat out depressing. One reason being that Douggie was pointless, another being the fact that the Devils lost. What bothered me most, however, was that jerk Messier's constant attacks on Doug. We all remember the playoffs last year, right? That ex-Ranger and his blatant mid-ice cross check to Dougie's face...and with no call by the official. It set the tone for the playoffs, that is, the Rangers can't play hockey, so they try to beat up everyone in front of the goal. Anyway, I do give credit where credit is due, Pavel Bure, the Russian Rocket, had a good game...but overall, very depressing...
Devils:1, Vancouver:3
Wednesday,January 28th: Devils Vs. Oilers(A 9:05 game)
Well, I have to admit that I missed then entire first period because I was out ice skating. But there was a cute little kid with a Gilmour jersey on at the rink (it matched the one I was wearing) and a guy who looked strangely like Dougie...I had to keep reminding myself they had a game in Edmonton. Well, anyway, back to the game, unfortunately, no points for Dougie here, maybe in Vancouver? From what I saw, he seemed to be playing up to normal Doug Gilmour standards and had a really nice shot on goal in the third period that, unfortunately, nobody in front of the net was able to do anything with. But, well, a tie is a tie, and though I don't like ties against teams like the Oilers,it doesn't much matter.
Devils:1, Oilers:1
Sunday,January 26th: Devils Vs. Canadiens (A 1:30 Game!?)
Well, not really any extraordinary hockey feats for Dougie on this fine Montreal afternoon, though he did get into a cute little pushing match behind the goal with some Canadien player, which was broken up by the ref and, for some reason, the annoying buzzer that kept ringing. Aparrently, Moog thought the previous Holik goal wasn't a goal...that lasted for about 10 minutes and we were forced to watch the replay of that goal about a dozen times before both Mike AND Chico came to the conclusion that Moog was just an idiot, and the ref decided he didn't want anything to do with the video replay booth. Well, the goal stood up and so went the rest of the game...No points for Dougie today...maybe Wednesday, I think I smell another defeat for Edmonton...
Devils:3, Canadiens:1
Saturday, January 24th: Devils Vs. Rangers ( A 3:00 Game!)
Well, in a clearly well fought game against the weaker opponent, the Devils squeaked out a tie against the Rangers. The Rangers resorted to playing a very violent game against the more defensive Devils as was apparent through the fact that both teams racked up about a million penalty minutes between them and that Gilmour was absolutely shadowed by Beukeboom and Samuelsson all game. It was also obvious from the fact that Douggie was skating around without a helmet for a couple shifts late in the third period. It was scary there for a while, I have to admit. Devils blew a two-goal lead and gave up three Rangers power play goals, before the game tying goal by Holik(assisted by Niedermayer and Gilmour!!!)that lasted the 5 minute overtime. I really sweated that one out.
Devils:3, Rangers:3
Thursday, January 22nd: Devils Vs. Pittsburgh
OK, we ALL know what happened last night...unfortunately. Well, Douggie played extremely well, despite being on the ice most of the game. He was credited with the assist on the second Devils goal of the night. It must be made perfectly clear that NONE of the goals scored by the Penguins were against his line. That's all I have to say about that game.
Penguins:3, Devils:2
Tuesday, January 20th: Devils Vs. Detroit
Dougie had an extremely well played night against last year's Stanley Cup champs. Though I'm still upset he was not invited to play for North America in the All Star Game in Vancouver, Doug didn't seem too affected, recording an assist on ALL THREE GOALS that the Devils scored. Read my lips! He had 3 assists and somehow managed to lose out on being star of the game to none other than recently acquired Jason Arnott. Jason, we like you, but I have to give honorary star of the game to the G-Man on this one.
Devils:3, Redwings:1
