I’m more than happy with Chicago’s pickup of Doug Gilmour from free agency. First of all, it’s a 3-year contract, which means 3 more years of Douggie. Second, it’s an 18 million-dollar contract! That’s nearly twice, per year, what Douggie made with the Devils last year. In addition, any step that moves the salaries of hockey players up is a good step in my book as hockey players are the most over-stressed, underpaid players in professional sports. Third, it’s a team where Douggie wants to play. He has a chance to lead the Hawks to a Stanley Cup before he retires, and that makes me happy.
I am, however, upset that the NJ Devils were too cheap to reacquire him because he was the only source of offensive power and sheer playmaking that they had last year. On a more personal note, Chicago is 760 miles from where I live and 747 miles from where I’m going to school, whereas the Continental Airlines Arena (Devils home ice) was about 45 miles. I guess I can catch some games at the CAA or in Ottawa, but it’s just not the same as having Douggie here in NJ…
