1997 Season Highlights
1997 National 24 Hour Challenge, June14-15, 1997. Terry Bryant, Debbie Judge, John McCool, Jeanette Aragon, and Linda Kohout tested their mettle in this unusual event. Terry pounded out 259 miles but didn't even place in his age category. John finished with 241 miles, just a few miles shy of 1000 cumulative miles. Jeanette and Linda placed 3rd and 4th in their category and Debbie teamed up with Don Hughes (unattached) to take 4th in the mixed tandem category. Anyone care to join the group next year? Or how about volunteering as SAG support and watch what happens when the sun goes down!
1997 EDS Cup at Major Taylor Velodrome, June 13-15. Several Wheelmen participated in the EDS Track Cup event held in Indianapolis. The Speedway entry in the Team Pursuit couldn't wait until their next chance to work together. Roger Bowersock pounded out an 8th place, 1:10 kilo. This led him to the EDS Cup/National Championship event in Colorado Springs. Roger had a great experience there but was glad to come home to the Midwest where there's more air.
1997 Tour de Brookside, Many thanks to all the Wheelmen and their significant others who helped make this a successful event. Over $1500 in cash and prizes was given away. Unfortunately, very little stayed in the team. We had a great team turnout for the races with Tim Robison, Doug Robinson, Greg Wood, Darren Reno, Terry Bryant, Dottie Wood, Linda Kohout, Hugh Hem-Lee, Nathan Laremer, and Tim Konrad among those who rolled up to the starting line. Many thanks to Tom Lynn and Glenn Gereis for all their hard work in preparing for this event.
Tim and Doug's Excellent Adventure. In July, this dynamic duo took full advantage of the summer off from teaching and made a road trip up to the 'foreign' venues of Kenosha, Wisconsin and Northbrook, Illinois. In Kenosha, Tim held out for a personal best 125 laps in the Midwest 150 lap Point Race, while Doug finished 2 laps up with 12 points to finish 8th overall. Tim and Doug teamed up for a 5th place Madison finish in Northbrook and Doug took 4th in the points race. Way to go, guys!
A first time for everything. In July Terry Bryant and Debbie Judge did their first criterium as Wheelmen at the State Fairgrounds. We're happy to report that they both finished the race with rubber side down. Terry's field was larger than expected and Debbie's race was combined with men. She gave them a run for their money and took 2nd in Women 30 and over.
Atta-girl, Dottie! On Dottie's first outing to Major Taylor in 1997, she stomped away with fourth place in the Omnium. Not bad!
1997 IN/KY District Track Championships, August 22-24. Speedway accomplishments were numerous. Greg Wood and Tim Robison made the top 8 in the 200m TT with Tim placing 2nd with a 11.99 second time and Greg settling with a PR. Tim came away with 4th with Greg in 5th after the sprint rounds. Roger Bowersock did a 1:14 in the kilo to with the Ohio gold medal and the Doug Robinson doing a 1:19 to place 4th in Indiana. Doug also placed 2nd in the 4K pursuit and 6th in the points race. Mark Denny and Hugh Hem-Lee also turned in strong kilo times just of the medal pace. Darren Reno had his best race of the season in the 90 lap points race and Tim turned in a exciting performace the Kerin with a strong through the open door move the 400m to go but just couldn't hold of the charging pack. Linda Kohout gained valuable experience in this event. Did we forget anyone?
BikeWave ‘Cross - O - Rama’, Nov. 30th, 1997 Major Taylor Velodrome, Indy, IN The blue and orange were well represented amoung the winners of what we hear was a sloppy mud fest. In the CAT 3 race, Doug Robinson placed 3rd and Roger Bowersock was 6th. In the women's race, Debbie Judge took home 4th place. Photos are on the BikeWave website. The MTV site swears they are there, but the ones of the snowy January 'cross race are good, anyway.
Women's Club Velo ‘Cross - O - Rama’, December 14. Two team members represented the blue and orange on this beautiful day. Roger Bowersock improved his record from the last race and placed 2nd in the Cat 3 race. Tim Robinson enjoyed himself despite choosing not to finish the race. The webmaster was there to catch all the action, so check out these photos! We all hope that Tracy Johnson gets her revenge on the guy who just wouldn't stay off the race course! Sometimes volunteering can be more dangerous than racing.
