Elk Grove High School
Thundering Herd Football Policies
1) It is the responsibility of each athlete to notify his coach IN ADVANCE of any absence from practice. This may be done by a phone message or in person, but not through a friend.
2) If a player is in attendance at school, he is expected to attend practice.
3) Missing Practice:
a) If an athlete misses a practice (for any reason, excused or unexcused) during a game week then that athlete may not start the game. 'Me athlete may then enter the game at the coach's discretion.
b) If an athlete misses a practice 48 hours prior to a game, then that athlete may not play in that week's game. (In special conditions this rule may be appealed to the Head Varsity Coach)
4) Excused absence - if an athlete misses a practice for any valid reason and notifies his coach IN ADVANCE, this is considered an excused absence. Players will be expected to makeup missed conditioning.
5) Unexcused absence - An unexcused absence is given to an athlete who fails to notify, IN ADVANCE, his coach; or who does not have a valid reason for missing practice. If an athlete has TWO unexcused absences he could be dropped from the team.
1) Athletes must adopt the attitude that "they are students first". Each member of the Elk Grove Thundering Herd Football Program will conduct themselves in a manner that is consistent with the guidelines outlined by the School Athletic Code.
2) Each athlete must follow the board-adopted minimum standard for participation in extra-curricular activities.
3) Each athlete must follow the Football Educational standards outlined in these policies.
1) Since students are permitted to participate in extra curricular activities only if their academic grades meet the standard established by the district, the Football Coaching Staff will monitor the progress of each of their athletes. It is our belief that football does not interfere with regular classroom activities, but instead enhances the athletes progress.
2) After the first three weeks of school we will conduct a walk-around grade check for all freshmen football players and J.V. or Varsity players with a history of academic problems. These forms will be monitored by each staff and if the athlete has a current D in a class they have one week to demonstrate progress or be assigned to mandatory study hall.
3) If, at any time, an athlete is failing a class or is close to failing, a Coach may require that this athlete attends a mandatory tutorial/study hall held at 7:15 AM prior to school daily. Coach Lombardi of the Varsity Staff will monitor and/or instruct these sessions. Failure to improve or attend these sessions will jeopardize the athlete's participation in the football program.
1) Freshmen and Junior Varsity Football Players will be expected to wear a Tie, Dress Shirt and nice pants to school on the day of all away contests. If the athlete is required to dress for the game at the site of the contest, they will wear this attire to and from that contest. If they dress at home, their uniform will be worm on the bus.
2) Varsity Football Players may purchase and wear the team shirt/sweater to school and to and from the contest. This attire may be wom by the varsity only as a substitute for the tie requirement. Nice Pants and appropriate
1) Game Jerseys will be wom by each player to school on the day of each home contest or, if the contest is on Saturday, the Friday preceding the game.
1) All Varsity players must pass at least two (2) of the following minimum standards in order to participate on the team.
a) 3.0 GPA (Second Semester grading period)
b) 230lb Bench Press
c) 300lb Squat
d) 180lb Clean
1) All VARSITY players will be required to participate in a weight training program during the season. They may elect to take weight training before school, or as a regularly scheduled PE class, or may stay following each practice.
2) The purpose of this strength training is to maintain their existing strength during the season. The work that each athlete did to make himself stronger in the off season would be lost if a maintenance program was not mandated.
3) Since one of the purposes in strength training for football is to help avoid injuries, the need to maintain all such development actually increases as the season goes on. The loss of this strength could increase the chance of injury.
1) Rule: We are requesting that during football season the only hat that players wear is an Elk Grove Football Hat.
2) Rationale: We want to emphasize that the only team in America that our players should advertise is the Thundering Herd Football Team. We are asking that no other type of hat be wom, during season, unless it displays Thundering Herd Football.
1) Philosophy: Players must never perpetuate a fight and should leave the field immediately so they might not be construed as promoting an incident.
2) Reaction: Once a fight erupts, all players must immediately leave the field and "squad-up" in their own team box on the 50 yard line. No one is allowed to touch any opposing player. If one of our players is in trouble and is within ann's length of another player, then that player is allowed to pull his comrade out of the fracas, but if the player is not within arrn's length, then they must leave the field and let the assistant coaches retrieve any remaining players on the field.
It must be clearly understood that failure to respond immediately to the "crisis control" program will result in disciplinary action.
1, (PLAYER NAME)_____________________ along with my parents, have read and agree to follow the rules, regulations, and policies described in the Elk Grove Football Handbook. We have also read and understand the meaning of the Hehnet warning contained on the bottom of this contract.
WARNING!
NO HELMET CAN PREVENT ALL SUCH INJURIES
I __________________________,Student Athlete at Elk Grove High School, agree to participate in a 7:30 a.m. student study hall for the length of the football season. I understand that this class is for my benefit and I acknowledge that I must adhere to the following rules. I also understand that failure to comply with any of these rules could jeopardize my position of the Football Team.
1. I agree to call in advance, when I am sick, or will miss any study session for any other legitimate reason.
2. I agree to be on time!
3. I agree to buy a notebook for the specific purpose of recording all daily homework assignments and further agree to bring that notebook to each study session.
4. I agree to complete all homework assignments every night.
5. I agree to inform Coach Lombardi when I am having trouble in a class. This allows coach to get tutorial help.
1. First infraction: Run a Slammer
2. Second infraction: Sit out of one game.
3. Third infraction: Turn in equipment and will be dismissed from team.
There are three ways an athlete can be assigned to these study hall sessions. By personally volunteering, by parent recommendation, or by Coach Lombardi's directive.
To earn your way out of these study hall sessions the student athlete must demonstrate improvement in all of his classes. (an example of this improvement would be getting a 3.0 for in the first quarter)
I___________________________,Varsity Football Player at Elk Grove High School, agree to abide by the following behavioral rules for the length of the school year. I understand these rules are designed to help me become a better student, a better person, and ultimately a better football player. I also understand that failure to comply with any of these rules could jeopardize my position of the Football Team.
1. I agree to abide by the school rules at all times.
2. I agree to avoid situations away from school that could cause embarrassment to myself or my football team.
3. I agree to take seriously my commitment to academics and my classroom conduct.
4. I agree to treat with respect fellow teammates and coaches at all times.
IT IS THE FEELING OF THE COACHING STAFF THAT YOU HAVE ALREADY BEEN EXTENDED MANY SECOND CHANCES, THEREFORE, FAILURE TO COMPLY WITH ANY OF THESE RULES OR TO CREATE ANY SITUATION THAT IS NOT IN THE BEST INTEREST OF THE FOOTBALL PROGRAM, WILL RESULT IN THE IMMEDIATE DISMISSAL FROM THE TEAM.
Dear:
The first semester grades have been recorded on our Football Check list and I wanted you to know how we are evaluating the current varsity prospects. Beginning March lst we will have a Status Chart posted in the display case on the Coach's office. Every two weeks we will be evaluating all varsity prospects with regard to his position on the chart Here are the four categories that a prospect can be listed in and the criteria used to determine that list:
PLAYER - Good student, does lift weights; may have a detention for an occasional tardy; sometimes satisfied with his performance; can be a leader in school but sometimes chooses not to be - bottom line: will not hurt our championship goal.
" ?" - Up and down student; very seldom lifts weights; has Saturday schools; has OCS; attitude towards performance is "why should I do it"; leadership ability is as a source for weekend party locations - bottom line: if the team is winning will follow along, but if things get rough will be the first to jump ship.
TO BE (ELIMINATED) - Terrible student; never lifts weights; many Saturday schools,OCSS, and home suspensions; talks about improving but does nothing; parties, alcohol and other substances are the main focus - bottom line: will destroy belief in team philosophy of"hard work, equals success". (Next yeai's seniors in this category will be eliminated at the end of 3rd Quarter, all others at the end of 4th quarter)
Where do you fit? At the present time, the evaluation process is early and is based mainly on grades and student behavior. If you have a low position and want to raise it then see Coach Lombardi. Grade checks, weight goal challenges and behavior checks can easily be obtained and raise your position. Here is how you are rated so far: Name: <FIRST> <NAME>; First semester GPA: <GPA lst Sem>; Status Chart Position: <Status Chart>.
Remember, by the first day of practice in the 1996 season you must pass at least two of these minimum standards. Have you been challenging your goals in the weight room?
GPA - 3.0 GPA - 3.0 GPA - 3.0
Bench Press - 230 Bench Press - 200 Bench Press - 170
Squat - 300 Squat - 260 Squat - 220
Clean - 180 Clean - 160 Clean - 140
