Philosophy
This is our best deep play. The homerun threat. We put a horizontal stretch on the CB or FS giving us a deep 2 on 1 pass play that negates any underneath coverage.
Formation
It can be ran from all formations or motioned to but we prefer the 2x2 set to give us a full field horizontal stretch.
Alignment
Y and Z align outside the numbers about 1-2 yards apart. X aligns inside the numbers and H aligns inside the Hash marks.
Pre-Snap Read
QB walks to the Ball and looks for potential 7 man Blitz. QB has no true Hot read so he has to decide to change the play or align in shot gun. Once QB has determined
There is no threat of 7 man blitz he looks to see what Combination he will be working. QB will decide to work the Post/Wheel and read the CB or Post /Middle combination and read FS.
Post/Wheel Post-Snap Read
If QB decides to go to the Post/Wheel read, he will drop back 5 big steps and a hitch. As he drops back he looks FS off to the backside middle route. As he finishes his drop he reads the CB. If CB has turned his hips to the Post route QB will look CB to the Post and throw the Wheel route high and over the top of the CB, out in front to the inside shoulder of the Z's Wheel route. If CB does anything else but cover the Post throw the ball high and over the top of the CB and FS to the Y's Post route. QB will hit Y's Post at a spot about 30 Yards deep outside the Hash. Over throw Y and make him go get it. Y has a chance on a over thrown ball but FS and CB have a better chance on a under thrown ball. FS should not be able to cover the Post because of its depth an the influence middle route by H. CB cannot effectively cover both routes so this is a really easy read. The main problem comes with the throw as it is a deep throw, giving CB and FS plenty of time to recover. If QB feels pressure he can throw to Y on his post break at 12 yards or set up and send the ball high and over the top to the spot 30 yards down field outside the hash. Throw the ball as a deep timing pattern. Make Y go and get it.
Post/Middle Post-Snap Read
If QB decides to go to Post/Middle read he should look FS off to the Middle route. If FS vacates the middle look to see if SS has jumped to cover middle third. If MOF stays open hit H in the middle at a about 18 yards over the LB's. If FS does anything else keep looking him to the middle route. QB will set up and throw the ball to X high and over the top of the CB and FS. QB will hit X's Post at a spot about 30 Yards deep outside the Hash. FS should not be able to cover the Post because of its depth and the influence middle route by H. CB cannot effectively cover the Post as he still has to cover deep third in case H runs a Corner or if its man coverage he has bad positioning on X.
Pattern Adjustments
X Post route
Zone or Man X will put his head down and run to a spot 30 yards deep, 1yrd inside the Hash. X will not look back to QB until he has gotten by the CB and FS. X breaks his skinny Post route at 12 yards.
H Middle Route
Zone or Man H runs right at FS. If FS covers him he stays in the middle and tries to get open at a depth of 18 yards. H's main job is to influence the FS. If FS vacates the MOF, curl up at 18 yards and get eye contact with the QB. Look for ball high and over top of the LB's. If H has man coverage and MOF is open keep on running look for ball high and over the top.
Y Post Route
Zone or Man run a Post route breaking at 12 yards. Get eye contact with CB and make him cover you. Look for the ball high and over top, outside the hash marks at a depth of 30 yards. QB can also hit you on your break so be prepared for the ball at all times. If you get bump coverage try to pick Z's man then get up field into your route. If the FS stays on hash or tries to cross your face run up field past him.
Z Wheel route
Zone or Man run up sideline trying to beat CB deep. If you see bump pick off Y and look for ball quick.
Defensive Problems
The biggest defensive problem is blitz. To help against blitz we use max protection keeping H or Y in to block. This depends on who we want to get the ball to. Bump coverage with two deep safeties are only a problem if they can re-route the WR's.
Conclusion
Post is a great deep play that has the potential to go for a long gain.
