Option
Philosophy
This is a play to let the slots get open on their own. A great play vs man.
Formation
Any formation is fine. We just want to isolate the slot 1 on 1.
Alignment
X & Y align inside the numbers. Z & H align wherever they want so they can get a good release and get open.
Pre-Snap Read
QB looks for 7 man Blitz. If he determines blitz he has to make someone Hot by audibling to it. If QB sees no threat of blitz he looks to see what match up you would like to go to. He then finds the man he and the slot will reading.
Post-Snap Read
QB snaps the ball and takes five quick steps and a hitch. He determines if the slots man is going to stay and cover him or drop to a curl or flat area. If SS vacates the seam area, H and Z will Curl at 10 yards, getting eye contact with the QB and sliding to the open window. QB will deliver a chest high fast ball to the H or Z. If SS is in man, bump or pattern read zone H and Z will lean into SS at 8 yards and break to side line. QB will throw the Over the outside shoulder of the H or Z. If CB is waiting or looking to rob H and Z will take it up on a Corner route. QB will gather his feet, step and throw a high, over the top the outside shoulder corner route. If H or Z does not read the CB robbing, QB has X or Y on the skinny Post.
Pattern Adjustments
X Post route
Zone or Man X will put his head down and run to a spot 30 yards deep, 1yrd inside the Hash. X will not look back to QB until he has gotten by the CB and FS. X breaks his skinny Post route at 12 yards.
H Option Route
SS covers an Area - Curl up at 10 yards slide to open window.
SS covers H - Lean into SS at 8 yards and break to sideline. If CB is in your way take it up on Corner route.
Y Post Route
Zone or Man X will put his head down and run to a spot 30 yards deep, 1yrd inside the Hash. Y will not look back to QB until he has gotten by the CB and FS. Y breaks his skinny Post route at 12 yards.
Z Option route
SS covers an Area - Curl up at 10 yards slide to open window.
SS covers H - Lean into SS at 8 yards and break to sideline. If CB is in your way take it up on Corner route.
Defensive Problems
1. ILB and SS squeeze or combo Option route.
If they squeeze the route we can run an Out to the outside WR putting him 1 on 1 on the CB. We can also Dig the outside WR behind the ILB.
2. Cover 2
If the CB is robbing the Option route. We can have the outside WR run to the void and stop, like a 15 yard Curl. We can change play to Smash and let the slots have the Corner area to work.
Conclusion
Option is a great way to let your inside slots get open. It also is a great play to isolate them 1 on 1.
