Oldest child of Lief (who played second division Bandy) and Lena (who was a swimmer on the Swedish national team). A younger brother named Markus. Enjoys fishing and used to play bandy (Swedish floor hockey game). Considers groundstrokes as biggest shot...Keeps a diary on his matches and opponents...Coached by Thomas Hogstedt.

1999 in Review
Started the year as no. 52 in the singles ranking. Broke into the top 50 after his victory in Orlando.
However, he went out of top 50 after that, and things changed after his QF match in Bastad, which
saw him winning the next 2 trophies in a row. This year also marked his first QF in the US Open. Ended
as world no. 15 in the singles rankings, and also no. 2 in Sweden after Thomas Enqvist (#4). He won 5
titles altogether, tying with the records Sampras and Agassi for the year.

Matches won-lost: Tour: 27/30 (singles). Won Amsterdam. Finalist : Umag. Semifinalist : Nice Challenger.
Quarter-finalist : Halle.
1998 in Review
Has not been in a good form, until a golden fortnight in August, when he reached the final in Umag, and won his second career title (Grolsh Open) in the following week. Made his Davis Cup debut, and joined the Swedish team in the first round and final ties.

Finished as No. 2 Swede in ATP Tour Rankings behind No. 4 Bjorkman. Compiled an outstanding season with first career ATP Tour title and achieved career bests in match victories, Top 10 victories and earnings. Played well during claycourt season with SF in Atlanta (l. to Stoltenberg), St. Pölten (l.
to Rafter) and QF at French Open (d. No. 1 Sampras, l. to Dewulf). Survived 46 aces by No. 3
Ivanisevic in 2nd RD at Wimbledon and won 14-12 in fifth set. Returned to clay and won his first
career Tour title in Bastad (d. Marin). Also a SF in Amsterdam (l. to Moya). During indoor season, reached final in Ostrava (d. Bruguera, Muster, l. to Kucera). Finished with 20-7 record on clay, 11-7 on carpet. Posted a 3-4 mark vs. Top 10 opponents. In doubles, reached first career Tour final in Doha

Strong September results led to breakthrough into top 100 after starting the year at no. 174. Won first career Challenger in Alpirsback in early September and followed with first ATP Tour SF in Bournemouth, where he beat Bruguera before losing to eventual winner Albert Costa. Kept clay success going by winning Bad Saarow Challenger the next week (d. Knippschild). Started
the year by reaching 2nd RD of Sydney (d. Goellner, l. to Ivanisevic in 3 sets) as a lucky loser then qualified at Australian Open before losing in the first round. Moved indoors and reached Lippstadt Challenger SF and Wolfsburg QF before moving to the clay season and advancing to the QF of the ATP Tour event in Casablanca (d. Carlos Costa). Also reached French
Open 2nd RD as a lucky loser. In doubles, reached Agadir Challenger final (w/Fredriksson).
A Little History
Together with Thomas Johansson, won a doubles title in 1989, and again in
1993, the Italian Open doubles (juniors).
1992 - Qualified for first ATP Tour event in Stockholm at age 16 (l. 1st RD to Rostagno) and next two years played in four Satellites
1995 - Successful on all three levels (Satellite, Challenger,
Tour)...Winner at Baltic Satellite (49 points), reached first final at Siracusa Challenger (l. to El Aynaoui) and advanced to first ATP Tour QF in Bastad...In doubles, won Baltic Satellite (w/Flygt, 47 points), Siracusa Challenger (w/Nydahl) and reached final at Agadir Challenger (w/Fredriksson)
