Wayne Morgan just completed his second year at Long Beach State after leading the 49er's to a 10-18 mark in 1997-98. He has posted a two year mark of 23-32. This past seasons recruiting class, Morgans first, was touted as one of the nations best by ESPN SportsZone. Morgan, 48 was named the schools 14th head coach on April 17, 1996 after 12 years as an assistant to Jim Boeheim at Syracuse University. Morgan replaced Seth Greenberg, who became the Head Coach at South Florida. Morgan served under Boeheim at Syracuse from 1984-96 and coached in the Division I ranks for a total of 19 years before coming to "The Beach". Boeheim's lead recruiter, Morgan was credited with bringing Sherman Douglas, Conrad McRae, Adrian Autry, Lawrence Moten, John Wallace and Otis Hill to Syracuse. A "proven" closer, Morgan needed no endorsement from his head coach before signing recruits. Before Syracuse, Morgan coached for five years at Xavier (1979-84) after four seasons (1975-79) at Dartmouth College. As as prep, Morgan played at Wingate H.S. in Brooklyn, NY. His college career began at Westchester (NY) CC, leading the team to 54 wins in two years. He moved on to St. Lawrence, and helped lead the Saints to a 17-6 record as a senior. Morgan stayed at St. Lawrence as an assitant coach in 1972-72, earning his B.S. in physical education. At Ithica College in 1973-74, he earned his master's degree in physical education. Born October 7, 1950, Morgan and his wife Mari Beth have a 14-year old daughter Jerusha, and a one-year old son, Shane. His mother, Phyllis Morgan, lives in Brooklyn, while his father, Tom Morgan, has retired to Jamaica. |
