The Phoenix Coyotes try to win their first postseason series in 12 years tonight and avoid the embarrassment of blowing a three games to one lead in Game Seven of their Western Conference quarterfinal against the St. Louis Blues.
The Coyotes were primed to eliminate the Blues at home in Game Five but Scott Young scored in overtime. Jeff Finley snapped a tie midway through the third period with his first career postseason goal as the Blues forced tonight's Game Seven with a 5-3 victory on Sunday.
St. Louis is trying to become the seventh team this decade to overcome a three games to one deficit, having also done so in 1991 against Detroit. Phoenix has lost eight straight playoff series since the Winnipeg Jets defeated Calgary in the 1987 Smythe Division semifinals.
"We're going to win Game Seven," Coyotes coach Jim Schoenfeld said following Sunday's loss. "I would tell you I'd stake my job on that. But it's already been done."
The Phoenix-Winnipeg franchise is 0-3 all-time in Game Sevens, while the Blues are 5-5.
Blues goaltender Grant Fuhr earned his 89th career playoff victory Sunday, moving past Billy Smith into sole possession of second place on the all-time list behind Patrick Roy.
Fuhr has allowed 15 goals on 148 shots in the series for an .887 save percentage. Coyotes goalie Nikolai Khabibulin sports a .915 save percentage, having surrendered 17 goals on 218 shots.
Right wing Dallas Drake leads Phoenix with four goals and seven points. Defenseman Al MacInnis leads the Blues with three goals and nine points.
