DETROIT -- Dallas will try to pull even tonight while Detroit looks to advance to the Stanley Cup Finals for the second straight season when the Stars battle the Red Wings in Game 6 of the Western Conference finals.
The Stars staved off elimination in dramatic fashion Wednesday, tying Game 5 with 85 seconds left in regulation and winning 46 seconds into overtime on Jamie Langenbrunner's 90-foot slap shot that beat the Red Wings 3-2.
The goal was Langenbrunner's first of the playoffs, ending a 15-game goal-scoring drought. He recorded 23 goals, including six game-winners, in 81 games during the regular season.
Dallas has gone 3-4 on the road during this season's playoffs, and will try to end the "Joe Louis Jinx." Since moving to Dallas from Minnesota in 1993, Dallas is 2-16-2 all-time in Detroit and is winless in five playoff contests there.
The Stars' power play has been virtually non-existent, going 0-for-20 in the series and getting just one power-play goal in its last 47 chances.
Igor Larionov and Tomas Holmstrom scored for Detroit in Wednesday's loss. The Red Wings have been outshot by an average of nearly 13 shots per game over the last three contests.
The Red Wings are a win away from a return to the Stanley Cup Finals despite little offensive production from three of their big guns. Brendan Shanahan has not scored since Game 4 of the conference semifinals against St. Louis. Steve Yzerman has yet to record a goal in the series, and Sergei Fedorov also only has one assist in the series.
Game 7, if necessary, would be played Sunday in Dallas.
