Tuesday September 28, 1999 Chicago at Toronto
Defenseman Daniil Markov's goal in the final seconds of overtime gave the Toronto Maple Leafs a 4-3 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks in the exhibition finale for both teams. Markov corraled Mats Sundin's pass at the left point and skated into the slot before beating goaltender Jocelyn Thibault with a low wrist shot with 15.3 seconds left. Todd Warriner scored twice and Sundin collected three assists for Toronto, which completed a 5-4 preseason. Curtis Joseph made 31 saves, including a sliding glove stop on Tony Amonte's one-timer from the right side midway through the extra period. Amonte had a power-play goal and J.P. Dumont and Wendel Clark also scored for the Blackhawks, who went 4-5 in exhibition play and open the regular season on Monday at San Jose. The Leafs begin the season Saturday at Montreal.
Monday September 27, 1999 Buffalo at Toronto (Hamilton)
Dominik Hasek was in midseason form in his first 60-minute appearance since the Stanley Cup Finals, leading the Buffalo Sabres to a 3-2 exhibition victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs. Hasek stopped 32 shots in his second preseason game. He played the first two periods of a 2-1 overtime loss to Washington on Friday in his first action since undergoing offseason hernia surgery. The defending Eastern Conference champions staked "The Dominator" to a 3-0 lead. Stu Barnes opened the scoring with a power-play goal 17:41 into the first period. Brian Holzinger got to a rebound of Jean-Luc Grand-Pierre's point shot and slid a cross-crease pass to Barnes, who tucked in a backhander. Jason Woolley and rookie Brian Campbell scored 2:26 apart midway through the second period, just over two minutes before Mike Johnson got the Maple Leafs on the board. Sylvain Cote had the other goal for Toronto, which slipped to 4-4 in the preseason. The Sabres wrapped up the exhibition campaign at 2-4-1.
Thursday September 23, 1999 Vancouver at Toronto
Fredrik Modin scored 2:15 into overtime as the Toronto Maple Leafs rallied for a wild 4-3 exhibition victory over the Vancouver Canucks. Modin worked a give-and-go with Ladislav Kohn, taking a return pass at the left goalpost and directing is past goaltender Kevin Weekes for the winner. Mark Messier lifted Vancouver into a 3-3 tie with 1:09 remaining in regulation when his slap shot from the right faceoff circle went over Curtis Joseph's shoulder into the top left corner of the net. Messier also had two assists. Yanic Perreault gave Toronto a 3-2 lead just 94 seconds earlier when he one-timed a pass from rookie defenseman Dmitri Yakushin over a sprawled Weekes. Sergei Berezin added his fourth preseason goal and Mike Johnson scored shorthanded for the Leafs, who improved to 5-4. Markus Naslund and Bill Muckalt also tallied for the Canucks, one of four winless teams at 0-5-2. Alyn McCauley was expected to return from post-concussion syndrome for Toronto, but was a late scratched after results of an examination by were inconclusive. McCauley, who suffered a severe concussion on March 3, is scheduled to be re-evaluated over the next few days.
Tuesday September 21, 1999 Calgary at Toronto
Enforcer Tie Domi snapped a tie with 8:16 left in the third period as the Toronto Maple Leafs picked up a 4-3 exhibition victory over the Calgary Flames. Rookie Nikolai Antropov tied it with a shorthanded goal -- one of three in the game -- at 7:01 of the final period before Domi's goal helped the Maple Leafs even their preseason mark at 3-3. Domi, who had eight goals and 198 penalty minutes last season, scored his first of the preseason, crashing the slot to knock home a rebound of defenseman Daniil Markov's slap shot from the edge of the right faceoff circle. Antropov, Toronto's top draft choice last year, is expected to start the season in the minors. But he capitalized on a 2-on-1 with Sergei Berezin, burying his first preseason goal past goaltender Tyler Moss. Todd Warriner also scored for the Leafs, who peppered Moss with 37 shots. Jeff Shantz scored a shorthanded goal and Derek Morris and Oleg Saprykin added power-play tallies for Calgary, which dropped to 2-4. Glen Healy made 27 saves for Toronto.
Monday September 20, 1999 Edmonton at Toronto
Rem Murray's power-play goal 3:38 into the third period snapped a tie and Bill Ranford stopped 20 shots, lifting the Edmonton Oilers to a 2-1 exhibition victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs. With Toronto's Steve Thomas serving a high-sticking penalty, Murray redirected Doug Weight's pass by Curtis Joseph from the top of the crease for his first preseason goal. Ryan Smyth tallied in the opening period for Edmonton, which improved to 4-2-0 in exhibition play. The Oilers are still without holdouts Roman Hamrlik, Bill Guerin and Mike Grier. Daniil Markov scored a power-play goal with 5:19 left in the second period for the Maple Leafs, who dropped to 2-3-0 in the preseason. Toronto rested captain Mats Sundin and left wing Sergei Berezin. Joseph went the distance for the Leafs, stopping 18 shots.
Friday September 17, 1999 Toronto at Vancouver
Sergei Berezin scored a pair of third-period goals to give the Toronto Maple Leafs a 3-1 exhibition victory over the winless Vancouver Canucks. Berezin pounced on a rebound of Terran Sandwith's point shot 8:35 into the final period and slipped it between Garth Snow's pads for his second preseason goal. Just under nine minutes later, Berezin whipped a wrist shot from the top of the right faceoff circle over Snow's glove. Yanic Perreault, rumored to be on the trading block, had a power-play goal and two assists for Toronto, which had a 33-23 edge in shots. Glenn Healy preserved the victory with key stops on Bill Muckalt and Markus Naslund in the final nine minutes. Rookie Artem Chubarov had the lone goal for the Canucks, who wrapped up an 0-3 homestand. Rookie Steve Kariya, the younger brother of Anaheim superstar Paul Kariya, picked up an assist and has figured in six of Vancouver's eight preseason goals.
Wednesday September 15, 1999 Toronto at Calgary
Derek Morris' power-play goal 4:42 into the second period proved to be the difference as the Calgary Flames edged the Toronto Maple Leafs, 3-2. Morris took a slap shot from the left point that found its way between the pads of Maple Leafs goaltender and former Flame Jason Muzzatti. Fred Brathwaite, who made 14 saves overall, stopped four shots over the final 20 minutes to preserve the victory. Phil Housley had a goal and an assist, and Marc Savard netted two assists for Calgary, which improved to 1-2. The Flames scored only one goal in losses to Montreal and Ottawa. Lonny Bohonos and Sylvain Cote scored first-period goals for Toronto, which fell to 1-2. Muzzatti made 14 saves and Jimmy Waite stopped all 13 shots he faced for Toronto, which was outshot 30-14. The Maple Leafs failed to convert any of their six power-play opportunities, while the Flames were 2-of-10 with the man advantage.
Tuesday September 14, 1999 Toronto at Edmonton
Sergei Berezin scored a nifty unassisted goal midway through the second period and Curtis Joseph made 30 saves as the Toronto Maple Leafs posted a 4-2 exhibition victory over the Edmonton Oilers. The Maple Leafs scored three consecutive goals bridging the final two periods and won without captain Mats Sundin and right wing Steve Thomas, who were healthy scratches. Jason Dawe and Daniel Cleary scored for Edmonton, which played without holdouts Bill Guerin, Mike Grier and Roman Hamrlik. Defenseman Janne Niinimaa and left wing Ryan Smyth also sat out. Berezin scored at 9:12 of the second period as Toronto went ahead, 3-1. He intercepted a pass from Chris Hajt at center ice and skated down the left boards before cutting across and beating goaltender Tommy Salo. Joseph stopped eight shots in the first period, 10 in the second and 12 in the third as Toronto evened its preseason record at 1-1. Steve Sullivan made it 4-1 just 87 seconds into the third period with an unassisted shorthanded tally. Jason Bonsignore had snapped a 1-1 tie at 6:07 of the second. Salo stopped 18 of 21 shots and Eric Heffler turned aside 10 of 11 for the Oilers, who dropped to 1-2 in the exhibition season.
Sunday September 12, 1999 Toronto at Chicago
Jocelyn Thibault and Steve Passmore combined for 29 saves and Tony Amonte had two goals and an assist in his exhibition debut as the Chicago Blackhawks blanked the Toronto Maple Leafs, 4-0, in a fight-filled contest. Thibault, who did not accompany the team for Saturday's 2-1 win at St. Louis, turned aside 20 shots over the first two periods before Passmore took over. Amonte also did not play on Saturday but looked in midseason form tonight. He opened the scoring with 5:11 left in the opening period and extended Chicago's lead to 3-0 with a power-play marker late in the second. Geoff Peters and Bryan Muir also tallied for the Blackhawks. Toronto's Glenn Healy stopped 10 of 12 shots before exiting with 7 1/2 minutes to go in the second period. Former Blackhawk Jimmy Waite surrendered two goals on nine shots. Rookie Nathan Perrott and Ryan Vandenbussche of Chicago and Shawn Thornton of the Maple Leafs all were ejected after participating in three brawls.
