There can be no more moral victories for the Washington Capitals, who host the Detroit Red Wings in Game Three of the Stanley Cup Finals tonight trailing two games to none. The Red Wings are heavily favored to repeat as Stanley Cup champions but the first two games have been extremely close. Detroit held on for a 2-1 victory in Tuesday's opener and had to rally from a two-goal deficit in the third period before Kris Draper scored 15:24 into overtime to give the Wings a 5-4 win in Game Two on Thursday.
The win kept Detroit's hopes of a second straight sweep in the Finals alive and ended Washington's five-game sudden-death winning streak. The Wings are 6-3 overall on the road this postseason but lost their last two games in Dallas in the conference finals.
Red Wings captain Steve Yzerman has been his club's most consistent performer in the playoffs. He has points in five of his last six games and leads all postseason scorers with 23 points.
Joe Juneau and Adam Oates each lead the Caps with 15 points.
Neither team has done much on the power play in the first two games. Detroit is 0-for-7, while Washington is 1-for-8.
The Red Wings are 8-0-1 against the Capitals since January 30th, 1994.
Detroit left wing Vyacheslav Kozlov suffered a charley horse in the second period of Game Two when he was hip-checked by defenseman Sergei Gonchar. He did not return and is listed as day-to-day.
Game Four is Tuesday in Washington.
