1st half: Bolton had to ride out a twin threat from strikers Jason Roberts and Lee Hughes to stand any chance of 3 points. The expected onslaught happened from the beginning with Bolton, playing in yellow, defending well. Unfortunately, Simon Charlton limped off early with a pulled hamstring and was replaced with Leam Richardson. Richardson's contribution was to more than make up for the loss. With WBA on the break, Bo Hansen brought down Roberts as the striker was about to enter the Bolton area. Despite pleas for a penalty from the noisy home crowd, a freekick was given with Hansen booked. Half way through the first period, Bolton were on the break with a ball from Richardson to Frandsen who ran down towards the West Brom goal. His cross found Hansen whose neat back heel gave the unmarked Isiaih Rankin the simple task of slotting home. Despite more pressure from the home team, Bolton held out to the break, with Franck Passi being booked for an off the ball incident. 2nd half: Yet more early pressure in the first few seconds saw Mark Fish make a superb tackle on Quinn in the area to clear the ball. Hughes had a header wide and Quinn put his effort over the bar. Holdsworth surprisingly replaced Rankin, followed onto the pitch 5 minutes later by old favourite Bob Taylor who inspired the midlands crowd to cheer on their team even more. After Dean Holdsworth had a long range shot just wide Marshall came on to replace John O'Kane. With 15 minutes to go, Bolton were again on the break. Gareth Farrelly scored after a Holdsworth shot rebounded to him off a defender. West Brom would not give up and in the last minute Hughes hit the crossbar.
