January 25, 1995 was not the best of days for Eric Cantona. Having been spotted kicking Crystal Palace defender Richard Shaw in an off-the-ball incident at Selhurst Park, Cantona was sent off. Messy events ensured when Eric reacted angrily to obscene remarks made by a Palace fan. In a blind rage, he dived kung-fu style into the crowd and kicked the fan in the chest. The nation absolutely lost it and Cantona was convicted of assault in court, banned from football and narrowly avoided a two-week stint in prison. His reaction:"When seagulls follow the trawler, it is because they think that sardines will be thrown into the sea."
