How
I Spent My Summer Vacation: Day 3

We're up early to get on the bus to France and our first World Cup game - ![]()

.
Here we relax in the Chunnel train in front of our 2nd home on this big adventure, Leon's
Tour Bus with our unintelligible driver Clive. Good driver, even if we could never
make out a word he said.
We had enough time for a 90 mph game in an empty car until a Chunnel worker
told us it wasn't good enough for the train's closed circut TV and to stop before our
skill with the ball broke something.

The
crowd going into the stadium in Lens was packed into one gate on the south side.
The French National Police are a humorless lot. But I think they enjoyed
thoroughly searching and patting us down. But hey, by the 5th World Cup Game, I was
starting to like it too.
Only two stadiums in France leave their fence up
and I get to sit behind one. Great view, huh? This is Germany's
1st goal. I missed it cause I was looking through my camera's tiny viewfinder. The Yugo's
kicked Duetch butt. Klinsman gets carried off, and Bierhoff leads the
comeback. He's a big son of a gun.
Our Hotel
in Le Touquet was an interesting spot. I got quite fond of the continental
breakfasts of croissants, rolls, preserves and cafe ole'. Somebody needs to tell the
French about that new invention, the shower curtain.

We watched Team
inexplicably lose to
in a cheesy dive of a bar on a big screen with the French
announcers unmercifully dogging the US effort. The kept flashing very unfunny
political cartoons at inopportune moments. What a sad ending for this beautiful day.
