| National
Referees and candidates gathered to work, learn, and develop their skills at the 2000
National Referee Certification/Recertification and Professional League Training Seminar in
Fullerton, CA, January 27-30, 2000. The theme of the seminar was "Towards the Future
With the Past." Congratulations to the 49 newly-certified National Referees, and to
the other 176 referees (Nationals and candidates) who attended the seminar. The seminar was planned and led by Alfred Kleinaitis, USSF Manager of Referee Development and Education, who arranged for a number of distinguished guest and speakers: two members of the FIFA Referee Committee (Dr. Edgardo Codesal, Mexico, also Chairman of The Football Confederation's Referee Committee; and Lars-Ake Björck, Sweden); 14 recipients of the National Program's most prestigious award, the Eddie Pearson Award (Fernando Alvarez, Paul Avis, Harry Baldwin, Don Byron, Angelo Bratsis, Robert Evans, Dick Giebner, Jack McCabe, Pat Smith, Roger Schott, Bob Sumpter, Thomas Webb, Heinz Wolmerath, and Mike Wuertz); USSF President Dr. Robert Contiguglia; USSF Vice President (and Referee Committee Chair) John Motta; USSF Chief Administrative Officer Bill Sage; and USSF Director of Membership Services Julie Ilacqua. Other special presenters and guests included Dave McKee (Director of Referee Assessment), Joseph Machnik (MLS Director of Game Operations), Jim Moorhouse (USSF Director of Communications), Brian Quinn (National Staff Coach), Mike Balson (USL), Vinnie Mauro (Referee Representative to the National Board of Directors), Wolfram Blattner (USASA), Jim Finger (Director of Referee Administration), and Carl Schwartz (Referee Magazine). |

| The
seminar began with introductions and an awards ceremony on Thursday evening. Early on
Friday morning the referees took the physical fitness test and the written test of their
knowledge of the Laws of the Game and of related matters and worked on providing solutions
to difficult case studies. The referees heard lectures during the afternoon, followed in
the evening by a group dinner. Saturday morning was devoted to lectures, but the referees
moved outside during the afternoon, with field work sessions on various topics. Dr.
Codesal and Mr. Björck conducted a three-hour practical field session on the two-referee
experiment. Sunday morning saw retakes of the physical fitness test, followed by a
question and answer session with the Pearson Award winners and closing remarks. |
