R Smith 1967 Ross played 235 games and kicked 231 goals between 1961 and 1972.  He was one, if not the, best on ground in the Saints Premiership side in 1966.  Ross returned to the Saints in the coaching staff and made another appearance with the team in 1975 when the team was suffering through injuries.  He took up the mantle of coach in 1977.
T Lockett 1987 Tony Lockett was one of the strongest full forwards ever to pull on a pair of boots, kicking 898 goals from 1983 to 1994.  Lockett tied the Brownlow of 1987 with Hawthorn player John Platten.  In 1994 Tony left the Saints to play with Sydney Swans.

History of the Saints:

The Seasiders were invited to join the fledgling Victorian Football cclub in 1897 and played its games at the Junction Oval close to St Kilda Road.  It took the team 48 games before they registered their first win.
The Saints played their first Grand Final in 1913 and were defeated by Fitzroy (5.13.45 to 7.14.56)

It took until the 1960's before the Saints showed real finals intent, with the team being in the final 5 under coach Alan Jeans for most of the decade.   In 1965 the Saints went down to Essendon in their second Grand Final appearance.  (9.15.70 to 14.21.105) In 1966 the Saints pulled off the big one with a one point win over Collingwood in the Grand Final. (10.14.74 to 10.13.73)

The Saints next Grand Final appearance was against Hawthorn where they again finished runners up. (11.9.82 to 12.10.82) It was 1996 before the Saints had the opportunity to play Grand Final footy again, and again they were runners up to the  Adelaide Crows. (13.16.94 to 19.11.125)

Supporters of the Saints are a tenacious lot having seen their team struggle at the bottom of the ladder for close to 20 years, and a succession of coaches, including Mike Patterson, Alex Jesaulenko, Tony Jewell, Darrel Baldock, Ken Sheldon and Stan Alves in the past 20 years, have fought to keep the dream alive.  In the mid 1990's the Saints are on a resurgant wave with success in the Ansett Cup Grand Final in 1996, and runners up in the same competition in 1998.  The Saints finished as minor premiers in 1997 and runners up in the AFL Grand Final in 1997.  Looking certain to compete in the 1998 finals series hopes were high among Saints fans for a repeat of 1966, and the opportunity to raise the Premiership flag high over Moorabbin.   The Saints lost to Melbourne in the second Semi final of 1998, when the Adelaide Crows went on to win their second successive premiership.
