Diagnosis: The Clash of Egos, Remedy: Chyna?
By Laura
(from WWF magazine, January 1999)

Power... inflated egos... the clash of personalities. These are the ingredients for a disaster just waiting to happen. And the potential disaster is the possible split of DX.

With Chyna in the mix, however, can a DX split be averted? Can she heal their wounds? Does she even want to?

In everyones life there comes a point when its time to leave the nest - time to break away from the natal family and become autonomous. Its human nature. I believe the same occurs in all groups, professional and personal. No matter how strong the bonds, the bottom line is that individuals eventually outgrow each other... and so do egos.

In wrestling, charisma, a competitive nature and top physical condition are prerequisites for success. These are also a surefire formula for the inflating of egos. Top it off with good looks, a multitude of title holdings and what does it spell? D-Generation X!

Chyna has been the backbone of DX since its inception. Not only have every member of the group said so, but on occasion the woman has referred to herself as Mama Chyna. Lets face it, in the competitive wrestling arena, a group of boys teamed together are going to have problems - egos clash and quarrels ensue... especially if all the members hold titles.

In addition to the fact that Triple H hails from the land of pretension, his status as the leader of DX has only exacerbated his pompous attitude. At the time of this writing, X-Pac is the European Champion, skillfully winning the title from DLo Brown. More impressive, however, and the New Age Outlaws, the tag team champions of the wooorrrllld (how can we ever forget)! The duo has claimed the title three times and Billy Gunn had been tag team champion three times prior, and accomplishment still unmatched in the Federation. All that success is sure to go to ones head... oh, mirror, mirror on the wall, who has the biggest ego of them all?

In the face of all this, Chyna has been the stabilizing force in the group, the most mature - the comforting mother figure. She has also always been there at the sidelines - ever ready to pounce when needed and ready to lick the wounds of her boys.

If we step back and closely examine past interviews with each DX member, Chynas calming effect and her ability to hold the troops together have been reiterated time and again. However, these compliments have been not as forthcoming from one member - Badd Ass Billy Gunn. In turn, when Chyna was asked about her feelings regarding the New Age Outlaws, she didnt have too much to say about them as a team... and zilch about Mr. Ass. Could Chyna be behind a possible breakup, edging out Gunn with her quiet but powerful influence?

That would be too easy an answer. It is so typical to place blame on the woman for the groups problems - Yoko Ono and the Beatles, for example. While I dont believe Chyna is behind a potential breakup of DX, if push came to shove would she choose a side? Perhaps alongside the man whom she entered the Federation? But I think Chyna is just too smart to put all her eggs in one basket.

This hen is no stranger to dysfunction in a group. Coming from a broken family, Chyna had to learn self-reliance - and she certainly hasnt fared too badly. In fact, her struggles growing up may very well have been the determining factor of her present success. Chyna has achieved momentous recognition not only for her unique status as a woman in the wrestling world, but as a result of her incredible athletic abilities. However, Chyna is more that body - she is an incredibly dynamic individual whose strengths exceed the physical. She is focused, determined and she perseveres despite any obstacles life throws her way. She is the perfect leader - strong enough to hold a group together, but also strong enough to take the road alone. Does Chyna want to break out on her own? Is she tired of mothering over a brood of squabbling children? Is it Chyna who has the biggest ego of them all?

DX as we have known and loved them for the past year look to some as if they are nearing the end. I truly believe that if Chyna wanted, she could tend to DXs wounds. But perhaps the current situation is rubbing salt into her own unresolved issues. Chyna knows better than anyone the upset of inhabiting an unhappy environment and, therefore, may choose to keep silent as the possible demise of DX looms on the horizon. From personal experience, perhaps Chyna feels that some broken things just arent worth fixing...
