Well, surprise, surprise, surprise! In assistant coach Bill Stewart's debut as head coach, the Islanders players blantantly displayed their exuberance over Mike's absense by pulling of a 5-2 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins last night. And if that wasn't hostile enough, Stewart put Tommy Salo in goal for the first time since the Potvin trade!
According to Marc Berman (as if he is to be believed anymore anyway!), Mike sat down to lunch Wednesday afternoon with President David Seldin and owners Steve Gluckstern and Ed Milstein to discuss his future. Mike suggested that he step down as coach, but the head-honchos advised him to try and stick it out. Mike agreed, but after the horrid display that followed that night in the Colosseum, Mike decided he must override his bosses.
Yesterday, before the game, Mike announced his decision to the players. Mike later said, tongue-in-cheek, "I didn't get any applause for it, but they might do that later." Yeah, they did do it later in the form of a 5-goal scoring binge. How's that for a slap in the face, huh?
