| When Dion Nash burst onto the scene in 1992,he was the most inexperienced player in 30 years to be included in the New Zealand line-up. He had only played 4 first class games for his province Northern Districts. He had impressed during the Youth Tour scoring several centuries plus two five-wicket hauls against an Indian Youth Team. But one performance in particular thrust him into the spotlight during New Zealand's tour of England. In a Man of the Match performance, Nash became the 1st cricketer ever to score 50, and take 11 wickets in a match at Lords. But due to injury, Nash had to give up a county contract with Middlesex and the chance to play for New Zealand. Though in late 1997, Nash was recalled to the national side, during the Carlton United one-day series, where he made an immediate impact, winning the spirits and imaginations of the cricketing public after a heart-breaking loss to South Africa on the last ball on the match at the Gabba. But he has been in the side ever since. And he has proven he is not only a motivator, but he has the team spirit to lead the national side, as he shown he can, and did so well in regular captain Stephen Fleming's absense during most of the 1998/99 season. Fiercely competitive, Nash averaged 174 with the bat during the test series against India, saving the team many times, especially when he and Daniel Vettori put on a record breaking 8th wicket partnership, which earned Nash his test high score of 89 not out. This season he has proven that he has become a genuine allrounder. Though his career has been dogged with injury, and there should be more games next to his name then there is, Dion Nash has finally shown he can stay injury-free and has the attitude and ability to be successful for his country. |
