15th August 1998

Hednesford 2-1 Woking

After the long summer break, an eager crowd gathered at Keys Park for the first match of the season. A healthy away following and bright sunshine added to the anticipation. For all the atmosphere however, the best thing about the first half was the referees whistle at the end. It must be a terrible feeling as a player to be booed off at home with the season only 45 minutes old.

The second period heralded a much improved Hednesford performance. A solid defense led by Paul Blades was built upon by a hard-working midfield and excellent performances from the front two. Andy Hayward held the ball up beautifully and Ged Kimmins put in some good running and nice skill. Hednesford's first goal was a great header by Gary Fitzpatrick followed 10 minutes later by a cracking shot from Paul Ware after Woking failed to clear from a set piece.

From here the game got a bit scrappy, culminating in a sending off for Woking. With ten men, the opposition never really threatened Hednesford and the game was safe. I know from last season's experience Hednesford is a long way from Woking and I did not envy Woking's supporters the long ride home.
