An early goal from Slough was something of a shock. There had seemed no danger whem
Simpson went up for a clearing header 30 yards out but he unfortunately handled the ball.
The free kick was tapped to the side, avoiding the Hednesford wall, to Slough's Bolt who
made no mistake in blasting the ball into the back of the net.
Hednesford looked for an immediate response and Norbury slipped his marker on thhe left
side in the sixth minute and attempted to cross to O'Connor but was intercepted by
Stowell.
Dennison took the ball down the wing and crossed to Beaston who shot it into a heavily
defended Slough box to no avail. The crowd responded warmly to a 25 yarder from
Fitzpatrick which was just too high and skimmed over the crossbar.
Hednesford had the opportunity to equalise when Carty was brought down in the penalty area
but unfortunately Norbury was not as successful as he had been at Hull last week and the
Slough keeper dived the right way to block the ball.
Slough continued to find chinks in the Pitmen's defence but keeper Cooksey played superbly
and was not going to let anything else past him.
In the second half Hednesford piled on the pressure, a throw-in from Ware gave Norbury an
opportunity but unfortunately was shot wide. Hednesford looked like scoring throughout the
second half and on the 56th minute Carty shot from the side line straight into the corner
of the net in an unbelievable kick.
Hednesford maintained the pressure having many close misses and Dennison engineering
numerous corners until in the closing minutes from a Dennison corner Ware put the ball
into the net through a packed goalmouth. The Pitmen supporters were ecstatic and manager
John Baldwin did one of his dances for which he is becoming famous (following it being
shown on the TV coverage of the Hull game)
