A semifinalist at Lipton the year before, Pete was still trying to find his old hardcourt form. Hardcourts would prove to be less than spectacular for Pete throughout 1998.

Dagger in the Heart: Wayne Ferreira, losing to him 6-0 6-7 3-6. It was later discovered that Pete had torn his rotator cuff during the match, which would cause him to pull out of two indoor tournaments in April. This was also the tournament where Marcelo Rios took over the #1 ranking from Pete for the first time.
