Sybase Open

Pete entered the Sybase Open as the defending champion for the second straight tournament. The loss at the Australian Open was still haunting him. Throughout the tournament, it was apparant that his form was not that of 1997.

Opponents:

1st round: Jonathan Starke, def. 6-3 6-4

2nd round: Jordi Burillo, def. 6-3 7-6

QF: Marke Woodforde, def. 6-0 6-2

SF: John van Lottum, def. 6-3 2-6 6-2

Dagger in the Heart: Andre Agassi, the former #1 who was beginning another career ressurection, and was looking to establish himself as one of the top players. He defeated Pete 2-6 4-6. The most shocking thing was Pete's lackluster play during the final. This just wasn't the same player from last year. Burnout was definitely taking it' s toll on Pete.
