A week off had helped to clear away the negative vibes of the ATP Championships. Pete was relaxed, and hoping to win the US Ope in order to put himself in posistion to finish the year at #1. He had regained the #1 ranking, despite his loss at Pilot Pen, due to another ATP calender glitch that worked this time against Marcelo Rios.

    Dagger in the Heart: Leading two sets to one, a quadracep pull hampered Sampras as he lost in five to Patrick Rafter 7-6 4-6 6-3 4-6 3-6.
