[Pete Being Pete]

Wimbledon

Pete's saving grace in year's past. Going in, he admitted that his lack of a real offseason had him so burned out, he hadn't even wanted to get on the plane to play at the Australian Open. Speculations about Sampras abounded. He responded simply, "I'm fine. I'm going to be fine." He was expecting Wimbledon to work it's magic of years past.

Opponents:
  • 1st round: Dominik Hrbaty, def. 6-3 6-3 6-2
  • 2nd round: Mikael Tillstrom, def. 6-4 6-4 7-6
  • 3rd round: Thomas Enqvist, def. 6-3 7-6 7-6
  • 4th round: Sebastien Grosjean, def. 6-3 6-4 6-4
  • QF: Mark Philippoussis, def. 7-6 6-4 6-4
  • SF: Tim Henman, def. 6-3 4-6 7-5 6-3

Sweet Victory: After, what was to his standards, a horrible start to the year, Pete once again stood on Center Court at Wimbledon, hoisting up the winner's trophy. His opponent was Goran Ivanosovic, one of the most fearsome competitors on grass on the ATP Tour. Pete claimed his 11th career Grand Slam. Though he still had not quite found his form of 1997, it was clear that Pete was slowly emerging from the depths of the slump of the first half of the year.
    Record to date: 32-8
