PAUL HEGARTY

Paul Hegarty signed for United in 1974 from Hamilton Academical as a striker and played in that position for three years, then manager Jim McLean switched him to central defence, where he begun his partnership with Dave Narey which would endure for more than a decade of excellence.

He then earned the first of eight Scotland caps, and as Captain, led United to their two League Cup and League Championship triumphs as well as many cup Finals and memorable European occasions.

His was an outstanding contribution to the club and this was recognised with his testimonial year and in 1990, the waiving of a transfer fee when he moved to St.Johnstone, where he went on to win The First Division Championship with them.

His total of 706 first-team appearances, places him third in United's all-tine list.
