ARAB LEGEND NO.3
HAMISH MCALPINE

Hamish McAlpine was one of United's greatest goalkepers as well as their greatest character and was immortalised in Michael Marra's song "Hamish the goalie" in 1983.

He joined United in 1966 from Butterburn Youth Club and made his debut in 1969 , and over the next five seasons fought over the number one jersey with Donald Mackay, then Sandy Davie, finally claiming it as his own in 1974.

McAlpine like all the other players in this "Arab Legends" section, played in all of United's greatest matches, like the back-to-back league cup wins in 1979 and 1980 and the league championship in 1983.

He joined Raith Rovers in 1986, but his heart remained at Tannadice and when he finally drew down the curtain on his playing career he took up promotional work at Tannadice.
