Shin Splints
Definition-Pain
in the lower leg caused by exercise or athletic activity. The discomfort
is due to inflammation of one or several body tissues. Pain worsens
with exercise using the legs. The muscles, tendons or the bone covering
may be involved.
Signs & Symptoms-
-
Anterior shin splints: Pain in the front
of the lower leg. Pain radiates down the front and outer side of
the leg.

Posterior shin splints: Pain along the
back and inner side of the lower leg and ankle.
Causes and Risk Factors-
Inflammation of muscles, tendons and covering bone, usually due
to an imbalance of the calf muscles and the shin muscles. Shin splints
are most common with marathon running, walking, or jogging, particularly
on rough terrain.
Normal Course of Illness-
Complete cure requires rest and slow rehabilitation. Total time range
from 2 weeks to 2 months. Tough competition should be delayed until
you can exercise pain free.
Treatments-
-
Delay exercise until you can do so pain free.

Follow R.I.C.E
-
Apply heat instead of ice if it feels better.
-
Take whirlpool treatments if available.
-
Massage gently to provide comfort.
