Dundee United 1 Dundee 0

Bank of Scotland Scottish Premier League, December 12th 1999

United blast back into third spot with the last derby victory of the millenium (OK, OK, it's really not till next year, but try telling that to Robbie Williams?), but the jury is still very much out on life after the artist formerly known as Prince - now, of course, "King Billy".

The man who is surely the only Portugese striker to be known in certain circles as "Jocky" sealed our victory in the last minute with a fantastic finish after Steven Tweed's blunder gave him a free run on Douglas.

It could have been so different though, if Dundee had taken their earlier chances, most notably when Brian Irvine smashed a shot off the bar after our various shambolic attempts to clear a corner.

In truth ,the game was a scrappy encounter which may have provided drama for the just under ten thousand die-hards who watched the encounter, but will have been poor fare for the TV audience. Never mind the Beeb's Sports Personality of the Century, the Antiques Roadshow would probably have proved more enthralling for the discerning neutral.

The first half in particular will have troubled the Scotsport crew - it would be interesting to see how they got any highlights out of it, although both sides squandered an early chance apiece.

It took us until around the hour mark to launch our first shot on target, a curling effort by Easton which was carefully watched by Douglas.

Earlier, Dundee substitute Nicky Banger had provided the one moment of class in the game when he smashed a 20-yard effort which Combe turned expertly aside.

It was the visitors who held the upper hand for much of the second half. Corners in particular caused us problems, but the defence largely held firm, aided by some good goalkeeping and a few bits of luck.

Ferraz came on for McConalogue, but didn't look like doing anything until the last minute, save for getting a yellow card for what looked like an obvious dive.

However it all changed when - just after we had a penalty claim waved away - the big target man got the ball on the edge of the area.

His attempt at a Wieghorst-style flicked pass went straight to Tweed. Luckily, the defender produced an equally ill-advised attempt at flair, and before there was even time to berate big Quim, he had won the ball back and produced an unstoppable shot into the far corner.

A lazy git who does nothing and then produces thunderbolts out of nothing? Well, he may not be a replacement for Doddsy but it looks like he could give big Kjell a run for his money! Not that we cared too much for the moment as the goal sparked wild celebrations... don't feel sorry for the heap across the road after last year's Grady-inspired banditry.
