THE FIRST GREAT TEAMFans will always argue about the relative merits of teams from different eras. Many, however, may not be aware of the side which first put Hinckley Athletic (then called Hinckley Town) on the local football map.In 1899-1900, Hinckley won the "triple crown" - the Leicestershire Senior League, the Senior Cup and the Hinckley Cup - and firmly established themselves as an emerging force in Midlands football. They lost just two of their sixteen league games, winning the title by two points from Coalville who they thumped 5-0 away from home. Their record victory was a 8-0 thrashing of strugglers Shilton Town at the Holy Well. The team went into December unbeaten until a poor performance brought defeat at the hands of Barwell. Victory in the Hinckley Cup brought more silverware, and, after overwhelming Leicester Fosse Reserves 4-0, they took the Leicestershire Senior Cup defeating Gresley Rovers with a goal in each half from Beadsworth. The only slight disappointment came in the FA Cup (then know as the "English Cup"). After a bye in the first qualifying round, they easily defeated Barwell in the second and then upset Loughborough with a shock 2-1 win away. Just Hucknall Portland stood in their way of a lucrative tie with Leicester Fosse in the final qualifying round. Hinckley, with home advantage, dominated the game, had two thirds of the possession, but ultimately got knocked out by an odd goal. This defeat was soon forgotten in the "triple crown" triumph. The club had emerged as a dominant force in local football, beating arch rivals Coalville and leaving neighbours Barwell and Nuneaton trailing in the league. Perhaps even more remarkable than the season's silverware was the team's success against what were to become big city clubs. In a friendly at Coventry City, Hinckley overwhelmed their large neighbours 7-2. The new century seemed to be heralding the arrival of the first truly great Hinckley side.
