Grand Final Qualifier
Brisbane kicked off on a perfect Saturday afternoon for football at ANZ Stadium. Brad Fittler was the first player to touch the ball before passing to a fired up David Barnhill who knocked the ball on. This was to set the tone for the match.
Brisbane were now on the attack 10m out from the Roosters line. Ben Walker got the ball on the last tackle and put up the bomb, but an inform Richie Barnett took it on the full in the ingoal area.
Sydney city received a relieving penalty to the Roosters 3 minutes into the game saw Fittler find touch 45m out from Brisbane�s line. Barnhill had the first hit up and Andrew Gee hit him right on the chin and was placed on report. With the penalty the Roosters were then 30m out and threatening the Broncos line for the first time. On the last tackle Fittler put a kick across field but it was a shocker and Scott Gourley went up to knock the ball back but only managed to knock the ball forward. Darren Smith took the next hit up and Richie Barnett stripped the ball with two players in the tackle and was penalised. Brisbane received another penalty a few tackles later, once again for stripping.
Brisbane were on the attack 20m out from the Roosters line. On the 4th tackle Andrew Gee was at first receiver, (which probably put the Roosters defense off a bit) he threw a cutout pass to Darren Smith who got on the outside of Matt Sing and scored in the corner. Darren Lockyer missed the conversion. 4 - 0 after 8 minutes.
In the 10th minute Allan Langer was running decisively on the halfway line. As he came to the defense, he noticed an overlap out wide. He passed to Lockyer and he ran straight through a gap left by Cleary and Elsegood. Junee had him covered and he placed a little kick through which landed 1m in from the dead ball line and sat up perfectly for Michael Devere who scored under the posts. Lockyer converted 10 - 0 after 11 minutes.
The Broncos first set of six from the kick off was a good one and on the last tackle Lockyer punted the ball down field. Junee got the ball and tried to run around Darren Smith but Smith knocked the ball out of Junee�s hands while trying to tackle him. The ball bounced straight into the waiting arms of Wendell Sailor who ran 20m and scored in the corner. Lockyer missed the goal. 14 - 0 after 14 minutes.
The 18th minute saw the Roosters on the attack 12m out from Brisbane�s line. Bryan Fletcher ran straight and hard, then popped a sensational ball to Matt Sing and he showed great strength and determination to score the first try for the Roosters. Cleary converted 14 - 6.
In the 29th minute Phillip Lee played the ball back to john Plath who passed to Langer. Langer gave a great inside ball to Lockyer who got through a few defenders then found Darren Smith and he dived over in the corner. Lockyer missed the conversion. 18 - 6 Halftime.
In the 46th minute Michael Devere got around some lazy defense and was away. Junee tracked him down 40m out from Sydney City�s line. Junee deliberately held Devere down while he waited until his side was onside and he was penalised and sent to the sin bin.
Brisbane scored in their next set of six when Kevin Walters played the ball back to Phillip Lee who passed to Langer who gave another great inside ball to Lockyer who dived over the line. Lockyer missed the conversion once again. 22 - 6 after 49 minutes.
In the 53rd minute Petro Civoniceva was tackled 28m out. Langer put a little chip kick over the top which was recovered by Luke Ricketson who passed to Lam and he dropped the ball. Renouf picked it up and looked like he was going to score himself but unselfishly passed to the winger Devere to score in the corner. Lockyer converted 28 - 6, 55 minutes gone.
60th minute: Darren Lockyer put up the bomb and Andrew Walker knocked it on and Darren Smith dived on the football. Langer gave an inside ball to Tallis and he was tackled 1m out. Lockyer was at first receiver and he muscled through three Roosters defenders to score a soft try. Lockyer converted 34 - 6 after 62 minutes.
65th minute: John Plath was tackled 5m out. Langer gave a cutout pass to Walters who gave a cutout pass to Lockyer and Lockyer dummied past Jack Elsegood and scored. Lockyer converted 40 - 6, 66 gone.
67th minute: Petro Civoniceva was brought down 35m out from his own line. Andrew Gee threw a cutout pass straight into the waiting arms of Brad Fittler and Freddie ran 30m to score in the corner. Cleary nailed the goal and with those two points Cleary broke Mick Cronin�s record for the most points scored by a player in a single season. 40 - 12.
From the kick off Scott Logan knocked on. On the fourth tackle Langer passed to Brad Thorn who shrugged off Rigon and Sing to score next to the posts. Michael Devere took the conversion and kicked the goal. 46 - 12, 71 minutes gone.
Sydney City scored their last try for season 1998 in the 76th minute, when Nigel Gaffey made a huge break and was tackled 5m out. A quick play the ball and Richie Barnett passed out wide to Lam and he gave it onto Elsegood who put it down in the corner. Walker kicked the goal from the touch line and the full-time score was a disappointing 46 points to 18.
