Wokingham 1 Windsor 1
23/12/00, league

Wokingham v Windsor games always seem to rouse the locals and this match was no different. On a chilly afternoon in the Queen's home town both teams played out a fairly even game. Wokingham started with a number of new players including, Stuart Collar in goal, Adrian Browne at centre back, Kieron Keane, Ian Jimmy, and Soloman Torson in midfield, Simon Whall up front and Shane Small on the bench.

Mellor's new 4-4-2 formation makes for a more balanced team and Wokingham made their fair share of chances in the opening exchanges. Soloman Torson coming closest with  a low drive from the edge of the box. But it was Windsor, the 'away' team, that scored first through Wokingham reject Terry Mitchell after about 30 minutes. A Windsor corner was cleared to the right corner of the box, only to fall to Mitchell. His weak cross somehow eluded everybody and trickled into far corner. 1-0 and the Wokingham players had to disappointed with conceding such  a soft goal.

Town had a great chance to get back on level terms just before the break. The impressive Torson jinked into the box and was brought down by a Windsor defender, unable to cope with his magical feet. Ian Jimmy stepped up to take the spot kick, only to fire wide of the left hand post.

The second period was just as even as the first. Town's goalie Collar kept them in the game with a couple of good saves, usually a result of the defence gifting the ball to Windsor with hospital balls at the back. Torson also went close for Wokingham arriving late at the far post only to blaze over. Mellor threw caution to the wind after about 65 minutes when he brought on debutant Shane Small as a third striker in search of the equaliser. Small who had been on trial a couple of years ago had impressed but didn't sign, but now he has suddenly returned and to great effect ! It was his goal after about 70 minutes that brought the teams level. Small made the most of a hash by the Windsor keeper to tap the ball into the net, the fans went wild and thoughts turned to taking all three points.

Both teams found things hard going as chances were relatively few and far between throughout the whole game. Neither team could muster a winner but all in all a draw was a fair result.

Wokingham looked better and improved on the Banstead performance that Mellor himself had cited as progress. The back four seem to be solid, Leacock and Browne forming a strong central partnership, with Turners class at right back and Horsted's crossing and pace on the left. Midfield I think still needs working on although I thought that Walkington was as good as ever and that Soloman Torson could prove very useful as an attacking midfielder, his touch on the ball was quite good and he showed he wouldn't shirk his defensive duties. Late in the game Torson raced back to tackle a Windsor forward who was bearing down on goal, only to injure himself and get carried off. More tough games to come but I think this team will not be troubled by relegation come the end of the season.
