What once seemed the impossible has now come true, Town have progressed to the second round of a cup. After some terrible displays in all cups for the last couple of years Town fans now have the prospect of a cup run to enthuse about. With what seems on paper a good draw in the next round ( Combined counties team Viking Greenford ) there could even be a mammoth cup run on the cards.
On a hot day at Stag Meadow Wokingham failed to produce much in the way of pretty football but they got the all important result. Whitehawk were a poor side really and from the kick off you could tell that Town would have to play exceptionally badly to get anything other than a win. With Turner missing his second game on the trot with a slight knock, Town's defence didn't look too convincing. But all credit to them they restricted Whitehawk to only a few half chances, with Leacock's heading often clearing the ball from danger. Blake was always a threat at the other end, but McCoy was struggling to cope with anything that wasn't played directly into his feet. Walkington returned in centre mid and Inns passed well but there was a distinct lack of creativity.
Wokingham took the lead towards the end of the first half, Ward found space on the left and his accurate cross found Blake at the front post. He had got in front of his marker and finished neatly to set Town on their way.
In what was quite a boring match Wokingham had a couple of chances in the second half to put the game beyond Whitehawk. McCoy got free and went clean through, one on one with the keeper. His weak shot was hit straight at the goalie, but the rebound fell invitingly for Ward who hit the side netting when it would have been easier to score.
Whitehawk then creeped more and more into the game as the half wore on, Town sometimes penned back too deep. Luckily Whitehawk weren't very good so they didn't score and with some audacious hold up play in the corner flags to waste time Wokingham easily held on for the win.
