Town started the season full of hope, with Mellor's new signings and the majority of last season's squad. Despite being a doubt before the game, new star Eurshall 'Eursh' Fearon began the game up front and Dave Puckett returned to the line up after his contract wrangling; the team looked good and expectations were high.

Berkhamsted lived up to their hype of title contenders in the early exchanges and dominated possession, they nearly converted this into goals, hitting the underside of the bar and having a few other opportunities. Town also went close at the other end, notably Campbell's superb volley striking the inside of the post, ballooning up, and rolling along the crossbar. How it stayed out the Lord only knows ! Then  as the half drew to a close Berkhamsted got clear on the left and Campbell brought down their player in the box, they scored the resulting penalty and went in the happier side.

The second half told a completely different story, Wokingham were simply amazing, unstoppable and tore apart sorry Berkhamsted. Puckett was brilliant behind the strikers and it was him that set up Town's first goal. Puckett's overhead, back heel flick ( words cannot describe this piece of action, it was like nothing I had seen before) put Fearon through and he cheekily lifted it over the onrushing keeper, GOAL 1-0. Wave after wave of Wokingham attacks followed this fantastic goal and it was the impressive De Fraine that produced the next bit of magic. He cut in from the left and hit this amazing curling shot towards the far top corner only to be clawed away by their goalie. Then minutes later De Fraine did the exact same thing and sent the ball smashing into the far stanchion, GOAL ! Wokingham fans couldn't believe it, goal of the season on the first day ? This sparked wild celebrations from Town's barmy army support and with the second half only 10 minutes old Wokingham had turned the game on its head. Berkhamsted now were shell shocked and could only watch as Odey powered his way through the defence to shoot Town's third goal, a great finish. The game then fizzled out into walking pace and Town had managed to record a win on the first day away at promotion rivals, the signs look good.
