Changes were needed after sunday, a match which the Wokingham Times described as 'The worst Wokingham performance ever ?'. Mellor changed the formation to 4-4-2, and this seemed to work better. Turner had to miss out with his eye injury, so the back four lined up with Booker on the right, Leacock and May in the middle and Christopher on the left. Campbell, Inns, Morris and Ward across the midfield and Blake and McCoy up front.
Hungerford did their usual trick of kicking down the slope in the second half, and this worked as they scored twice in the second period to get a point. Town took the lead in the first half from a Booker free kick. He drove the ball in from the right wing, McCoy rose well in the box to nod the ball across goal and Gavin Ward pounced to head home. Up to this point it had been a fairly even game, but it was Wokingham had a few more ideas, Hungerford tending to just kick the ball forward as far as possible as a way to set up attacks. Town went in at half time one up, with the make shift defence holding firm and always the possibility Town could add a second at the other end.
The second 45 started in a similar pattern but it wasn't long before Town had gifted the opposition with the customary soft goal. A suicidal offside trap from a free kick from the left wing was completed misjudged by the whole Town defence. They ran up far too late and managed to leave about 6/7 Hungerford players in our 6 yard box all ONSIDE ! One of them just headed home from close range past Freeman to bring them level.
Then in a dramatic turn of events Town restored their lead almost immeadiately from the kick off. Hungerford looked confident from their equaliser and closed down the Wokingham players very quickly from the restart. But an amazing ball down the right wing found Blake, his superb skills saw him glide past the defender. His powerful shot rebounded out to Ward who headed in for Town's second. Great goal and the Wokingham players went mad !
Hungerford equalised again about 10 minutes later. Their striker turned Christopher on the left and shot past Freeman, who only just failed to keep it out. Despite this Town always looked like they could add a third. Then a moment of madness. Leacock caught a Hungerford striker with a sliding tackle, but he was not the last man so only a yellow would suffice. The ref gave him a straight red and Town were down to 10 for the last 20 odd minutes. Mellor reorganised, McCoy dropping back into midfield, and the introduction of the more abrasive substitute De Fraine. Wokingham battled brilliantly and held on for the point.
