Wokingham 1 Horsham 3
29/8/00, League cup

On the back of their first three points Town entered the game against Horsham with renewed optimism and the knowledge that they had a tough game ahead against a strong Horsham side. Horsham had won all three of their matches so far this season and manager Steve Mellor called for an improved display to beat the men from Sussex. This is what he got but unfortunately this was still not good enough to progress.

Mellor made two changes from saturday's team, Inns replaced the suspended McCoy and May for Christopher. This pushed Nick Campbell upfront, Inns into centre mid, May played to the right of defence and De Fraine moved to left wing back. All these changes worked well as Campbell provided some much needed pace and energy upfront, Inns played with composure in midfield rarely wasting possession (yes believe it or not folks thats a man in an orange shirt not giving the ball away !), De Fraine used his work rate to give width on the left, and May gave cover for Ward to bomb forward on the right.

This together with a classy Horsham XI gave rise to what was a very entertaining game. There were loads of chances for both sides, glimpses of some quality passing football; both a far cry from saturday's match against Cheshunt. There was even a moment in the first half when Town looked like a good team. They actually managed to string about 20 passes together without the opposition touching the ball ! The fans couldn't believe what they were seeing as they sung their first ever justified 'It's just like watching Brazil' chant. However the excitement was over when the ball arrived at Alex Leacock's feet, his predictably stray pass went straight to a Horsham player.

In all fairness Town could have had the game sown up by half time. Ward raced clear of their defence twice with his lightning pace and when one on one with the goalie fired straight at him. Campbell also was in a similar position but elected to cross instead of shoot when he was well placed himself. These were three excellent chances that could another day have left the Town 3-0 up. Nethertheless Horsham certainly played their part. They also created a few good opportunities, coming closest when a shot hit the inside of the post and rolled across the line. Horsham's blond peroxide striker was a constant menace for Town's defence as he looked a cut above the static Wokingham players.

0-0 at the break and Town went in with confidence knowing they could beat Horsham and progress. And it was Wokingham that took the lead shortly after the restart, Gary Blake rose superbly at the far post to head in a corner. 1-0 and spirits were high, Town started to pass the ball nicely and looked the more likely team to score next. However it was a big cock up in the Wokingham defence that handed Horsham their equaliser. Alex Booker elected to duck and leave a cross only for the ball to drop at the feet of a Horsham striker who finished easily. 1-1 and Horsham's confidence grew as they began to take a grip on the game. 2 further goals resulted and despite playing well Town and out. On to the FA Cup on saturday when nothing but a win will suffice.
