Town 1 Cheshunt 0
26/8/00, league

A superb Gary Ward goal with five minutes left was enough to give the mighty Town their first win, and points, of the season. Inns picked the ball up and ran at the Cheshunt defence, played an excellent slide rule pass between the defenders to put Blake in the clear on the right, who squared it for Ward to slot home.

Apart from that piece of action there was not much else to talk about. This was an absolutely terrible game in which both teams were very poor and could hardly muster a shot on target between them in the whole 90 minutes. The first half was especially dire, both teams struggled to create anything in the final third and lacked magic. Town did manage some pretty passing around the half way line a few times but forgot to play any penetrative passes, giving strikers McCoy and Blake nothing to feed off.

By far the most entertaining moment of the first half was the appearance out of the tunnel of the Cheshunt goalie who was about 7ft tall (no he really was), 7ft wide and he sported a massively long pony tail haircut that swung around behind his back. A comedy non-league goalie if ever there was one !

Thank God for half time as it was well overdue, although the second half was no better. Town's passing was improved as they seemed to enjoy playing on the nice surface (that won't last long) at Stag Meadow. A Cheshunt player got sent off towards the end for 2 yellows and it was this that gave Town the impetus to go on and score the winner.

There is nothing else to say really as literally nothing happened during the game. Although Alex Leacock must get a mention for a solid as a rock performance at the back and Jimmy De Fraine for yet another fantastic display in centre mid. It was also good to see Walkington back after injury as he provided some much needed quality in the centre of the pitch and Ward was back to his energetic best on the right wing. There was also encouragement in seeing an improved display from McCoy up front although the team did look better when he was replaced by Inns in the second half.
