Wokingham 0 Bedfont 3
FA Cup 3/9/00

What an awful display. Town were poor and were humiliated at home to Bedfont, a team two divisions below Wokingham in the Combined Counties league. If Wokingham continue to put in performances like that then they well be playing them in a league match in a couple of seasons.

With an exciting away tie at Alesbury in the next round awaiting the winners, Town fans were expecting an easy win in the most important cup of them all, especially after an improved performance in midweek. Far from it as Town were for the main part out played by their lower ranked rivals. Wokingham could even only muster two shots on target over the 90 minutes, both of which barely tested the Bedfont goalie. This was one of those games where you turn up as a fan supporting your local team, pay your £4 to get in, and then go away wondering whether it was all worth it. You could watch better football down your local park on a sunday morning, it was deppressing. What was even more disheartening was to see a few new fans turn up from Wokingham to see the team in the FA Cup, only to be put through that rubbish. I doubt they will come back.

Steve Mellor may disagree but I am completely baffled by the team's formation. We seem to be playing a 3-5-2 on the left hand side of the pitch and 4-4-2 on the right, how bizarre is that ! We have the three centre backs, but with Calvin may playing alongside them as a right back. This allows Ward to play a more attacking role on the right wing, meanwhile De Fraine has to patroll the whole of the left hand side on his own. All our play goes down the right making it very predictable and easy to defend. Town are forced to sling long balls in from the right back position which all too often lack quality. The opposition simply pack the right hand side meaning Town find it hard to play through them. De Fraine ends up drifting inside looking for the ball giving them acres on the left to switch the play into as soon as they win it. It is so unblanced and echoes the England Euro 2000 line up, it has to be sorted out.Wokingham miss Walkington in the middle and they need to sing a left wing back so De Fraine can move inside and play the holding role.

Bedfont's three goals were pretty much all down to poor defending, free headers which shouldn't have been free. Leacock had another good game at centre back, as did Turner who had to go off towards the end of the game with a cut on his face. Freeman should also get a mention for some good saves and none of the goals were really his fault.

So Town's pathetic cup form continues, falling at the first hurdle in the last three years in the FA Cup and already losing in the first round of the Ryman Cup this year. Can things change next sunday in the FA Vase, perhaps we should bring back Barry McCoy................
