Banstead 2 Wokingham 1
16/12/00, league

Town's poor run continues with another defeat, leaving them with only 9 points from 13 games and still winless on the road this season. Town have also now dropped into the bottom three and lie 2nd from bottom, with tough games against Windsor, Marlow, Horsham and Hemel Hempstead coming up great improvement is needed.

It was the first game I'd seen since October, but I was far from optimistic given the previous run of results. It seems that Mellor has tryed to make some improvements and there was a few new players playing. Soloman Torson (a former Gahanaian youth inernational) has already become a fans favourite with his amazing name, and he lined up just behind the sriker, Blake. There was a couple of other new faces in midfield but I've lost my programme and forgotten their names, Walks played left wing, Booker right wing, and the defence was Turner, Leacock, Brown (a new centre back) and Horsted.

Wokingham started reasnobaly well and were holding their own, without really threatening the Banstead goal too much. Banstead had a couple of breakaways but were let down by their strikers inability to shoot. Town took the lead through their best player Blake, a cross came in from the right, it was flicked on by Torson (see below), Brown challenged for the ball with their keeper and defender only for the ball to fall to Blake at the back stick to slot in. 1-0, the first goal in 5 games and some much needed hope of a result.

'Solo' flicks the ball on in the lead up to the goal

Half time and the boys went in happy. The second period started on a very bizarre note. As the skies above south London darkened the floodlights came on, however only on one side of the ground. Come 10 past 4 it was too dark on one side of the pitch and the ref had to stop the match, amid a bit of confusion the players stayed on the pitch to kick the ball about while the Banstead officials attended to the faulty lights. Just when it looked like the game would have to be called off with Town 1-0 up the floodlights sparkeled into life.

They should have left them off. Not long after the restart Banstead got their equaliser when one of their guys fired in when unmarked from a cross. Things now began to get a bit dicey as Banstead grew in confidence and looked for a winner. Town found it hard to peg Banstead back and bar a couple of wasted free kicks when in a seemingly fantastic position and a few corners we did little to worry the Banstead goalie. Sure enough as we all feared they got their second late in the game to condem Town to the relegation zone.

Although this all sounds like doom and gloom I couldn't help but think that we were not actually that bad, I seen a lot worse believe me. 4-4-2 works much better as we are more balanced, Walkington looks like he could be useful on the left. What maybe would have improved things was to have Campbell on the left wing rather than the more defensively minded Booker. Weather permitting its Windsor next and the match all the fans want to see 3 points from.
