Nga Waka Aims

The following are the aims of Nga Waka as laid out in the consitution of the Society.

a.       To establish in Porirua a viable, vibrant and open waka club to promote the sport and culture of waka ama in the Greater Wellington area

b.      To develop a love and passion by a broad range of people in paddling single hulled and outrigger canoes of Maori and Polynesian design for competition, cultural and recreational purposes throughout New Zealand regardless of race, colour, religion, political affiliation, age, sex, sexual preference and physical disability

c.       To encourage a wide cultural and age diversity within the club consistent with the principals of the Treaty of Waitangi recognising Maori as Tangata whenua

d.      To encourage the retention of Te Reo and other cultural forms of expression, language appropriate to club members cultural and historical backgrounds

e.       To develop positive practical working relationships with local marae to provide opportunity for marae descendants to be involved and mutually benefit from participation in waka ama sport and marae agenda

f.        To encourage school students to participate and develop high skills levels at a young age

g.       To ensure people on low income to are given opportunity to participate in waka ama
