The results of the summer series of the Tampa Sailing Squadron Bay Races have been calculated and the series winner is Gene Dinisio in Shrew, entered in four of the five races held and finishing first (either in spinnaker division or overall) in all four. The first race of the fall series Bay Race was held on October 7, in light shifty breezes with five yachts competing; Shrew (Gene Dinisio), Sabre Dance (Bud Marafiote), Aardvark (James Nunn), A1A (Bill Mann) and Dream II (Kevin Michaels). In spinnaker. Shrew finished ahead of A1A and in non-spinnaker first place went to Aardvark with Sabre Dance in second and Dream II in third. The 17th Annual Fall Regatta is now history and if you weren't there, you really missed a great time. The winds were steady out of the north and northwest at around 12-18 knots, the weather clear and beautiful. We did have a big outgoing tide but that just made things more interesting. There were twenty-four yachts entered all together in four classes. Three windward- leeward races were held on the short course and the FOMA and cruising yachts completed the 15 nautical mile long course in about the same time. In spinnaker Fire and Ice finished first, followed by Pocket Rocket and Volcano. There were two divisions in non-spinnaker; in Division A, the winner was Thunder, second went to About Time and third was Irish Mist. In Division B, Aardvark took first place with Jornama and Bangarang in second and third. Woody Frazer in Thunder was the class winner with three straight wins. On the long course, Carin was the only multihull to finish and Godspeed won in cruising, followed by Sabre Dance and Nauti Gal. With the greatest percentage time difference over their fleet's average times, George Cussins in Fire and Ice was declared the overall champion. As always, this event could not have been the success that it was with
out the help of many club members. My thanks and appreciation to:
Many TSS members for bringing deserts and making our guests welcome. I'd like to give my special thanks to Bert Lacy for running such a super event on the water as PRO and to Pat Cosgrove for having the scratch sheets and race results ready in record time. These two issues can make or break a regatta's reputation with the racing community and they did it as well as I've seen anywhere, or better. As you may know, this regatta was held as a benefit for Habitat for Humanity, an organization dedicated to creating quality housing for the disadvantaged. Habitat for Humanity volunteers were active in the preparation of the event with printing and collating notices, obtaining raffle items and set up for the dinner, among other things. I'm proud to say that our club will be able to make a $1000.00 donation to Habitat from the proceeds of this race. This regatta counted as one of the TSS Bay Races also and the order of finish for club yachts in spinnaker was Fire and Ice, then Shrew and A1A and in non-spinnaker. Thunder with Aardvark in second and Bangarang in third. The planning and preparations for the 30"" Annual Gasparilla are already
under way with a meeting planned for the 13th of November.
I am going to try to contact many of the members who helped on the Fall
Regatta and hope that they will be able to assist in the same manner in
this next event. If you don't hear from me and wish" to help, please call
me (685-6096) or e-mail at [email protected]

I want to extend my personal "Thank You" to all the Members, prospective members and guests that pitched in to make the Fall Regattaa big success. Bob Meyer, in his report, has listed all the names on the "workers". I hope we did not forget anyone. We are not ignoring your contributions on purpose. In my experience the members of TSS always come through and put their efforts into presenting the Club in the best light and making the major events go well. This regatta was held to benefit Habitat for Humanity. Through your good work and participation we will be making a significant donation to Habitat for their programs. Thank You All, Bob Sardo, Regatta Director PS. I have some T-shirts for sale if your interested. |

The November Membership meeting will have a program presented by Eric & Joyce Nodland. They will bring us up to date on their adventures cruising in Europe and returning to the US. I personally am looking forward to this account from T.S.S. members who have "Crossed the Pond" and sailed is distant strange waters. The meeting will start early at 1930 hr. on November 20th. The business portion will be completed within one hour, with the program to follow. Refreshments will be served as usual after adjournment. Plan to attend this meeting to share in the adventures of sailing small boats on big waters with the Nodlands. I look forward to seeing all of you at the November meeting. He used a Ship 185 file picture which has Vinny and Jay. A few weeks ago Mr Haas wrote an article with interviews from 1940's
Sea Scouts. They all thought Sea Scouts was gone. (Because of Gay Glasser,
I was able to give Mr Haas current information especially about our
Regatta and TSS)

We were advised that spouses could not both be officers of a 501 C3 corporation. Therefore Bill Borrer decided to vacate his position as Secretary and help Paula in her capacity as Treasurer. The TSSYS board elected Kevin Gill as our new secretary. Kevin is an enthusiastic young sailor with racing aspirations. He is very active with the Habitat for Humanity organization and upon learning about our learn to sail program volunteered to be a part of TSS. Mr.Gill was nominated for the position of secretary and was elected. Bill Lemmer resigned as V.P. due to his new job which requires a lot of travel. We are looking for a replacement. We want to remind all that Christmas is coming and we have the perfect gift for that favorite niece or nephew in the form of an ESCAPE sailboat and trailer for only $845.00. A new ESCAPE SELLS FOR $2200.00. And trailer is worth at least $300. So you'll get a bargain for only $845.00 plus you'll have a tax write off. for your donation. Bud Marafiote |

Saturday, October 28, 2000, we left TSS around 9.am. setting sail for Venice. Weather was good, clear sky, light wind from the Northeast which boosted our sailing time and allowed us to reach Venice long before sunset. We caught us with other TSS members Bob Howard and Bill Matthys, sailing on Pipedreams. John and Marilyn Williams was anchored near the municipal dock on their boat, Purrfection. Bill was celebrating his birthday that night and was joined by several members of his family. All of us TSS cruisers were there to wish him well, and help eat his birthday cake at the Crow's Nest Restaurant. We would like to make a note here for others who might want to tie up
at the Venice municipal dock. Be forewarned, there are a lot of night creatures
there, namely wharf rats looking for a free meal if they can get access
to a galley. Several boats left open for cool breezes were invaded during
the night of the 28th. The following night Jack and Donna Dixon had the
same
The following two nights the Nauti Gal, Cracker Jack, and Purrfection were anchored at Cayo Costa. During our visit there, we visited the "tunnel of love" which we all enjoyed and would thoroughly recommend to others visiting there. Halloween was not forgotten because we were away from home. Purrfection was illuminated with hundreds of bright orange lights and a gigantic lit up pumpkin. AND THERE WAS TREATS FOR EVERYONE....compliments of John and Marilyn. That evening we all gathered aboard the Cracker Jack to share a meal with the Dixons. The next days we sailed on to Tween Waters and had lunch at the Green
Flash Restaurant, and anchored there for the night. Nauti Gal and Cracker
Jack started to make our way back home the following morning. Purrfectiol
just couldn't stop having fun. John had another week before he had to make
his dentist appointment so they continued heading south. Looking forward
The return trip was pleasant with good weather, light wind (fron the Northeast, of course), and pretty smooth seas. A good time was had by all and we hope we can all participate in another trip like this next spring - perhaps with a few more boats. |
