Manning's Debut with Colts Draws Mixed Reviews
(9 Aug 98)
Former Tennessee QB Peyton Manning
made his first NFL start for the Indianapolis Colts tonight, in a preseason
game against the Seattle Seahawks in Seattle. It was quite a debut,
as Manning's very first NFL pass was a 48-yard catch-and-run to Marvin
Harrison for a Colt TD. Unfortunately, it was the only real highlight
as Manning struggled for the most part. He tried to hit a double-covered
Torrance Small in the second quarter and had his passed picked
off by veteran cornerback Fred Thomas. Manning ended the night
completing 8 out of 15 passes for 113 yards. He did team up with
fellow rookie, WR Jerome Pathon, for a nifty 36-yard pass play in
the first half.
Manning's rival, rookie QB Ryan
Leaf of San Diego, fared somewhat better, completing 14 of 20 passes
for 116 yards and a TD as the Chargers beat the San Francisco 49ers, 27-21.
Hayden's Status Uncertain (9 Aug 98)
Sophomore Tennessee linebacker Jerrod
Hayden, who led all UT freshmen in tackles last season, apparently
has some academic shortcomings that have put his playing status for 1999
in doubt. Coach Philip Fulmer hinted today that Hayden might
come up short academically and has been missing some classes. Hayden's
name was not included on the football roster released by the athletic department
this week. Hayden is one of UT's most promising young linebackers,
and it would be a blow to the Vols' depth at that position if Hayden cannot
play.
Charges Against Harris Dismissed (4 Aug
98)
After having a hearing postponed in
June, a judge yesterday dismissed a charge of domestic assault against
Tennessee point guard Tony Harris after Harris's accuser failed
to appear in court for the second time. Harris's long-time girlfriend
Shayla Green of Memphis was unable to appear in June for a scheduled
hearing, saying she was sick with the flu. The hearing was rescheduled,
but when Green once again failed to appear, the charges against Harris
were dropped and the case was dismissed.
Harris is alleged to have hit Green
and pulled her hair in an altercation outside of Gibbs Hall on May 11.
Harris and his attorney Patricia Long Hall disputed the charges,
saying that Harris was innocent. Though cleared of the civil charges,
Harris still faces disciplinary action by the Student Judiciary Board at
UT.
