STEVE WHITEHALL may win a starting spot for Athletic in Saturday's home match against Neil Warnock's Bury. Manager Andy Ritchie is considering promoting the 32-year-old striker from the substitutes bench with his side still looking for the first league points of the campaign. A cracking goal in the reserves at Grimsby — his second of the season at that level — has greatly enhanced his prospects.
Whitehall is still striving for match fitness following an ankle operation at the end of last season. Ritchie said: "Steve has done quite well in the reserves and he was also lively when he came on at Gillingham. I will have to consider carefully whether to start with Steve or keep him on the bench." Whitehall's chances of starting are greater with Paul Beavers ruled out. The 20-year-old striker limped off at Gillingham after taking a kick on an Achilles. Ritchie must decide on his best strike pairing from Whitehall, Mark Allott, Matthew Tipton, Ryan Sugden and David McNiven.

Manning still up for it
Bernard Manning jnr, son of the rotund comic of the same name, has said that he and his consortium are still very keen to buy the club. However, he has gone on record as saying that initial negotiation were very promising but whilst a fair amount of progress had been made talks had now hit a bit of a standstill, something that Latics fans have seen happen all to frequently in the past. Manning jnr explained: "One of the main partners in the consortium is away at present. When he returns we will have a meeting and take things on from there. It is very frustrating, but I can't comment further until then."

Major clear-out decision

Andy Ritchie has finally decided that it is time for a total clear out of his playing staff, in order to ease the wage bill. The Latics have 36 professionals on their books and they can't afford to keep them all. It is like carrying three full sides and the playing staff is around double what it should be for a second division club.
The financial burden is crippling the club and preventing the boss from making a move or two into the transfer market. The boss said: "The chairman has spelled it out that we have no money. I do think that most of the players at the club are of a high enough quality to see us through. However, I would like to strengthen the squad as well." The major problem for the boss is that not many of the 36 become free agents at the end of the season and the three who are Kelly, Graham and Allott are all players that Ritchie will want to offer new terms to.
