Last-gasp Allott secures vital win

A diving header from Mark Allott on the stroke of full-time earned Latics a vital 2-1 victory over Luton Town at Boundary Park. A dire first period produced only two efforts on goal, with John Sheridan firing a free-kick well over the bar for The Latics, and Gary Kelly denying Luton's Matthew Taylor on the half-hour. Thankfully, the game sprung into life in the second-half, with Mark Allott spurning a gilt-edged opportunity for Oldham, and David McNiven - in for Matthew Tipton - with a disappointing finish when it looked easier to score. However, McNiven made no mistake on 66 minutes, when he raced on to beat the Luton defence before side-stepping Nathan Abbey in the Hatters' goal to fire home. With Andy Ritchie rallying his troops, Luton's equaliser with just five minutes remaining must have been a real sickener for the Latics' boss. Gary Kelly's poor clearance fell to Neil Midgley, and he raced on to beat the Latics keeper and level the scores. With time running out Latics probed forward, and got the rewards on the stroke of full-time. Mark Allott ghosted in between two defenders to meet John Sheridan's in-swinging cross and converted a diving header beyond Abbey. So, a vital three points for Latics, but Andy Ritchie will know as well as anyone that there's a long hard season still ahead.
Match report by Chris of Middleton .....
Oldham Athletic 2 Luton Town 1
This really was the game of two halves. With Oldham having an abysmal start to the first half, Luton struck the post early from a 20 yard free kick. The same outcome came from a scrap in the box, but the first half stayed goal-less. But the half time team talk must have been one of great motivation, as Oldham came out firing on all cylinders. The same post which had been hit twice by Luton, now saw more action as Mark Allot hit the woodwork from close range. The offensive continued until on the 66th minute, David McNiven burst through the defence, outstriding his marker, taking the ball round a stranded keeper, and slotting home to the welcome jubilation of the Oldham faithful.
It looked like the same old story 5 minutes from the end as a poor kick out by Kelly resulted in an easy goal for a rather surprised Luton attack. The same fate as Reading looked likely, but the heads of the lads did not go down. The 92nd minutes saw a John
Sheridan free kick scrambled in the box, but a bit of quick thinking saw Allot place the ball in for a rare Latics victory. Near four and a half thousand saw it.
