Reserves
win
Graham
comes through with no ill effect
Oldham Evening Chronicle
Graham's tonic
ATHLETIC
defender Richard Graham came through last night's reserve-team test at
Grimsby with flying colours. The 24-year-old, returning after almost nine
months out through injury, played for an hour in midfield. Graham, who
has been battling to overcome a serious knee injury, reported no ill effects.
It
is hoped he might be ready for first-team action in a fortnight's time
after a couple more junior matches to sharpen him up after such a lengthy
lay-off. Midfield player Phil Salt was forced to pull out of last night's
game with a groin strain picked up in training. Striker Paul Beavers, who
suffered an Achilles injury at Gillingham, should soon be back in action.
His injury is not as bad as was at first feared.
GRIMSBY
TOWN RES 0, ATHLETIC RES 1
A
STUNNING strike from Steve Whitehall — worthy of winning any game — earned
Athletic victory in last night’s Pontins League game at Grimsby. Let’s
hope the injury-plagued striker can reproduce such magic in a first team
badly needing such inspiration as they look to end their scoring blues.
Whitehall, regaining match fitness following a lengthy lay-off, struck
the match-winning goal after 39 minutes following a splendidly-worked move. Goalkeeper
Jamie Campbell launched an enormous clearance deep into the Grimsby half.
Ryan Sugden showed a fine first touch to control the ball and lay it off
to Whitehall who curled in a tremendous shot into the top corner of the
net.
Athletic
could have triumphed by a wider margin against a Grimsby side packed with
experienced players. Sugden was denied by a superb save from ‘keeper Steve
Croudson, while substitutes Danny Boshell and Nathan Wharton failed to
hit the target from great positions. It
was a promising performance in which Athletic defended so well that Campbell
had precious little work to do. Athletic fielded three central defenders,
with Iain Swan rock solid and ably assisted by the reliable Mark Hotte
and young Ben Futcher. They completely nullified the threat of the front
two, Bradley Allen and Mark Quayle. Athletic
grafted in midfield, with Richard Graham and Matthew Tipton forming an
unlikely partnership along with Danny Walsh. Graham, normally a central
defender, was returning after a near nine-month lay off while Tipton, normally
a front man, looked comfortable in the middle.Whitehall
and Sugden showed some neat touches and the latter was unlucky not to also
get on to the scoresheet.
Reserves:
Campbell, Tait, Clitheroe, Futcher, Swan, Hotte, Walsh, Graham (Boshell
59), Tipton, Whitehall (D McNiven 59), Sugden (Wharton 74). Subs (not used):
Mohan, McLean.

Defender on
the mend
Defender Richard Graham's long-awaited
comeback is gathering pace after he played his first game in nine months
for The Latics reserves last night. The big centre-back was back in match
action for the first time in nine months on Tuesday night when the reserves
took on Grimsby. Graham played for a full hour before being taken off for
a rest as he continues his rehabilitation. 24-year-old Graham last played
back in December and has since undergone surgery to repair serious knee
damage. The same injury also restricted him to just half a season in the
previous campaign and his commanding influence at the back has been sorely
missed. Delighted boss Andy Ritchie, very much in need of a boost during
the team's current plight, can't wait to welcome him back.
He said: "Having him available again
after such a long lay-off will be like having a new player. We haven't
got much cover in that department and it will be a major boost when he
is finally ready."
